In my limited experience with #vanlife people, usually the dudes are really chill bros and the ladies are... less so. But hey, either way here's hoping Tyll is doing well.

Y'all made me go watch Tyll again.

I wish he was around to talk about the LCD-5 and CRBN like he did with the LCD-4.

And his love for the Focal Utopia (Clear ended up being his everyday person 'end-game')

Thanks! I will try to audition VC sometime in the future.

As of now I settled with a HD650, which i (impulsively bought) last week. Does it fit? Surprisingly it does :)

Running from J2 balance, It has really good mid that I am looking for, kinda wish instrumental positioning could be slightly better, but I can live with it.

Side story: last time i heard HD650 was mid 2019, at that time I was not really impressed.

But this time it sounds amazing, probably because my chain is much better compared to what I have back then

Hi, which closed back for production would you recommend? I wanted to try the 7520 but it's impossible to find in mint condition sealed box. It's for electronic music, no tracking etc. I want something to mix and master and try to make the thing translate well elsewere.

The Audeze ones I've heard are annoying due weight.

Any other? budget unlimited assuming diminishing returns aren't worth it past a certain price.

    I have the 7510, k371 and dt770 600ohm. I want an upgrade.

    Using motu m4+magni 3

Are there any other DACs similar in sound and features to the Bifrost 2? Mostly the way it sounds, unison usb and minimal features?

I really like my BF2 but every Schiit product I've had has a transformer hum (I've tried it out at my friends house and it still hummed, also tried with a DC blocker) and when it gets late in my office it's really noticeable. So looking to go with another DAC in my chain.

Didn't know where to put this.. Linsoul announced a follow up to their current HarmonicDyne headphone. This new one is the HarmonicDyne Poseidon, the new gimmick is "Custom 50mm Nickel Diaphragm Dynamic Drivers". $280 or $300 via kickstarter (starts tomorrow), retail will be $435. Some images below.

Frankly this looks like garbage but I haven't heard the current one so what do I know.

Hi all, long time reader, first time poster.
Need an advice on upgrading from HD650 and/or getting headphones which can play more energetic/heavy metal genres as well as EDM and such. Current cans - HD800s which are totally fine, but not for extreme metal/electronic.
    Budget is up to $2000

    Thanks

Nickle is great when you want something to be heavy and tough. Neither of those are adjectives I want for a transducer.

I think the ZMF Atticus is a good consideration for your intended use. The Elex is another one, it's brighter and quite energetic. The Atticus is more laid back like the 650 but I think it still works well for faster genres. What is the rest of your chain?

Current one is hot garbage, so you're likely on to something here.

I haven’t heard the Denafrips but both of my suggestions would probably pair well with a Woo tube amp. The Atticus generally works well with anything, Focals on the other hand tend to be picky.

What't the general consensus of Burson Audio DACs / all in ones? They are a tad pricey, but come with local warrenty and support here (It cots me $100 to ship something to Schiit then $130 to return it to me).

I've looking at the 3XP for an all in one that I can run my SW51+ out of too. Would be really useful to have a headphone jack and also a microphone input for skype calls while working at my desk also.

What this current generation is like in terms of value or comparative performance, I can't say. But assuming they haven't gone backwards since the previous generation of Conductor I bought in 2016, they're very good.

I found mine had plenty of drive for HD650s (I didn't have tough planars then, so don't know about that) and was quiet enough for IEMs. Tonally it was on the thicker/weightier side but still quite clean -- I used it as a preamp in a 2-ch occasionally and found less color in the Burson than most of the power amps I tried. Really nice bass -- both quantity/slam and texture. I don't have any reliable memories of imaging or sound-/headstaging, though. And I think mine had a Burr-Brown DAC so no use commenting on it for what you're looking at.

    Hope that's helpful.

Excellent, thank you for that. Is there any way through looking at the design if I can tell if the RCA out from the DAC itself is gimped because it's an all in one?

The problem with ZMF is that they have a 10% re-stock fee, so in case if I don't like them I'll lose $100 + shipping which is honestly too much.

I'm testing headphones off Amazon for now, and so far I got (all IMHO):

The Audeze LCD-X 2021 is wildly praised. In fact: expensive, heavy (almost 800 grams). The famous planar bass was not found, something shapeless and booming was found instead. There are no highs. The mids are mostly ok. From any of my sources/amps they played about the same, the character of the sound did not change much. On the internets, the recommendation is to use them with EQ. With a price tag of $1200, it seems to be a little too much to mess with an equalizer, moreover, it immediately narrows the choice of sources to a computer. So, I sent them back.

Audeze LCD2C - where C is classic. Those. those same vaunted "deuces", but more modern. The first thing that killed was a freaking nasty peak in the upper middle, so nasty that you can't listen to anything. Otherwise, everything is the same: bloated bass and lack of treble. The middle is generally ok except for this peak. Sent back.

Audeze LCD-GX is kind of like a gaming headset, but according to reviews, the only more or less neutral headphones in the line, besides, with drivers from 4s (it seems like), and light both in weight and in drive power. They come, everything seems to be ok, I listen to the evening, and there is also a peak, but only at a lower frequency. Moreover, it turned out that the cable to one of the ears was defective and was stuck in the connector tightly, not to be pulled out. So I sent them back too. I listened to these ears for only one evening, but by that moment I was done with Audezes.

Focal Clear MG - like, at the level of 800x, a proprietary Focal sound! They come. Beautiful and all. I start listening - the sound is also fucked up. Instead of bass, muddy fuss, the middle recessed and there are almost no highs. I repeat: from any amp and from any source I have they sound the same. I start to google, half of the Internet likes them, and the other half describes the same thing that I hear. So I sent them back too.

Now, I don't ask for much, but I'd like to hear all parts of the spectrum, everything there is in the music, not just bass or highs (but I still love my 800s). So something like 650s, close to neutral but not analytical, maybe with a little bump in bass and highs, with good mids, clean and fast so I could also listen to metal and EDM if I want to.

So the question is, what else should I try from Amazon up to $2000?
