Another one from Jimmy Rosenberg. This song was written for the bassist's son. There is also a live version of a young Jimmy Rosenberg playing this, though the audio quality isn't as great as this.

And, finally from the man who started and perfected this style, and in course, influenced many jazz greats and influential guitarists.

    Additional Trivia:
    1.
Since they originate from India, their language still bears resemblance to Hindi and Sanskrit. The name Django itself (the way it is pronounced) finds its roots in the Sanskrit word 'Jaagrita'. Both mean the same thing - 'Awakened one'.

    2. Most people should be familiar with his music though as his signature tune 'Minor Swing' featured in the popular PC game 'Mafia'. It also features in 'The Matrix (1999)' - a cult classic by now. When Neo first meets Oracle, 'Minor Swing' can be heard in the background (particularly, Stephane Grappelli's solo).

This is Woodbridge High-schools Orchestras. There are Philharmonic, Symphonic, and Concert. My son (freshman) is a viola in the Philharmonic Orchestra and they play the first three songs. My favorites are Greensleves and Sleigh Ride (2nd and 3rd). Enjoy!

For reference here are my favorites... using my old first generation iPhone SE :p

    MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

Thank you youtube. Her voice is incredible. I love youtube for stuff like this. Stuff that makes you go "WTF. Okay, but why?" And then you realize you are crying.

I really need to dig deeper into Japanese music in general. I've heard a variety of wild things out on the outskirts of my reach, and there's always so much artistry to it.

They are quite good, especially for high school orchestra! Too bad you didn't have a pair of schoeps CMC62 in ORTF approximately 6 to 10 feet above the conductor aimed down at mid front-to-back fed into a Sound Devices MixPre3 mkii. The iPhone audio is not doing justice to their playing.

    *edit*
Ok, I see the first video which is full length has much better audio. Still, I think my suggestion might make improvements on even the first video.

I don’t listen to a lot of Classical but this is one of my all time favorite videos. Queue it up if you’re ever feeling black pilled about humanity.

Sir, any happy/upbeat jazz album that you can recommend (besides the usual suggestions like funk or Snarky Puppy)?

I love this man's voice--the great Malian grio, Salif Keita. So many fine tunes over the years. He just retired. This is the lead tune on his final recording (amazing). It doesn't hurt that some beautiful people show up here:

Trying to find a good production of ABBA's Dancing Queen but with a jazz quartet or the like. Preferably with tenor or alto sax, a trumpet, string bass, drums.

Have listened to about 5 different jazz / sax covers on Youtube and Qobuz in the last 20 minutes but none have really scratched the itch / captured the mood.

THANK YOU for posting manouche/Django cuts here! Truly a style of music that will never go out of style.

I'm crazy for this music and so many of its practitioners, current and past.

A couple latter-day manouche players--monsters both in technique & lyrical expression:

Adrien Moignard* covering Django's great "Nuages" -- the sound's a little sharp but the playing is lovely:

And Angelo Debarre covering Django's "Manoir De Mes Reves" (aka "Django's Castle"), my favorite of all Django's tunes:

*I saw him live once...a total musical mind-f**k.

Wow..didn't expect to find many Gypsy Jazz listeners here.

True, it would not go out of style, thanks particularly to fans, Gypsy folks who have kept alive Django's music even after so many decades (its part of their lifestyle) and the annual Django fests in Europe, where all the Gypsy Jazz musicians come together to honor Django's legacy.

Woah..Moignard and Debarre and straight into the deep end with 'Nuages' and 'Manoir De Mes Reves', Sir!
Debarre, surely is one of the few Gypsy Jazz guitarists today, who don't sacrifice musicality for speed. (I admit, I have only heard Moignard in passing. Glad the concert was so awesome).

    (continuing the manouche theme...)

Another thing I love about these great guitarists is their readiness to mix it up with jazz, especially the swing & early bebop styles that predominated during Django's career. Some of them move fluidly from manouche to jazz, retaining all their usual virtuosity and inventiveness.

One of many examples is Bireli Lagrene. He's one of the best manouche players in the world & has been since his teens. Listen to him light up the bop classic, Cherokee, on a big, gorgeous hollow-body jazz guitar:

Great..so you know Bireli Lagrene as well. Now-a-days, he is more into avante-garde style, which can be a bit jarring for newcomers to this genre.
Yes, he has been heralded as second coming of Django till he was superseded by Jimmy Rosenberg. Still is regarded as (one of, if not) the best and respected by all Gypsy Jazz guitarists). He comes up with unique phrases and all.

There is a "For Sephora" video of Lagrene playing with Rosenbergs, if I recall correctly, where he detunes and tunes the lower E string to complete the melody near the end of the video, seeing which Stochelo laughs heartily and signals to his brother Nousche - worth a watch.

PS: I don't know whether this would interest you or not, but I suspect the word "manouche" was integrated into French vocabulary from what Gypsies called themselves. It also finds its roots in Sanskrit, meaning people.

If you like Swing and bebop style of Gypsy Jazz, so much, you might have heard and love their handling of other styles as well, besides strictly swing.

    Waltzes:

    1. Django Reinhardt's famous waltz ( Slightly different than the album version)

    2. Valse de Wasso* (as played by Jimmy Rosenberg. Bireli and Debarre are accompanying him).

PS: Wasso Grunholtz was senior to Stochelo and Jimmy and an elder of their tribe. He was a composer of many famous waltzes and taught them many pieces. To this day, he is revered and admired by who's who of Gypsy Jazz.

Another style besides, waltzes is Gypsy style of Bossa Nova (For anyone not aware, don't know how to explain these rhythms in English. Easier to explain in Carnatic terms)

Here is one composed by Dorado Schmitt. Hard to choose 1 version (Rosenberg's version on their debut album Seresta is great besides Dorado's original version). However, I like this version best as besides being as marvellous rendtion, it is also useful for learning as well.
