If you are of a certain age you would be familiar that the peak computer audio experience was the Roland MT-32 midi processor. This was when PCM audio took up lots of space so music was stored in midi format and processed by software or output to a midi device. When games started to be released on CD-ROM, developers favored audio recordings over midi compositions and devices like the MT-32 were no longer needed.

These days the MT-32 can be software emulated just like old consoles. But also just like old consoles there are projects to duplicate functionality through hardware.

The MT32-Pi project has similar inputs and outputs as the original Roland. The digital processing side I don't think needs the FPGA treatment like MiSTer. DA side could use some attention. The original specs for the Roland show that the output was with pcm54 chips, a 16bit ladder DAC. I happen to have a Modi MB…which is a 16 bit R2R DAC!

Whenever I have the time and resources I would like to build this MT32-Pi + SPDIF out + Modi MB and compare to the software emulation supplied by ScummVM or original MT-32 if I can get my hands on it.

edit: reading a bit more about the MT-32 and it doesn't seem as simple as just using an R2R DAC. After the DA stage there's some analog post-processing which contributes to a signal decay. Depends on what the MT32-Pi can do but I think its safe to say nothing will sound quite like the original.

I have quite a few people in my retrogame group that have an MT-32 in their setups. I asked what speakers they used and most of them use Logitech. o_O

I just came across this vid from the youtube algo. He shows side by side comparisons and OSSC looks like a good device.

I bought both of them also and forgot to get accessories. So did two separate orders with $20 shipping each. You can probably sell the second one for a good profit if you don't want it.

Yeah I would keep both units just in case someone in the family breaks one me.

I was about to cop the accessories then decided I'd hold for a bit and think through that purchase completely before I place the second order there. I don't think I want a dock and I only REALLY have a lot of GB/GBA carts so I need to think through what I actually want. If I'm playing on a TV, I'll use a MISTer.

Kids get retro emulation handhelds. They don't touch my actual collection :)

I bought both colors of the Pocket as well. Going to give the black one to my friend for Christmas and I'm keeping the white one. Love how the white one looks in the My Life in Gaming video. The screen really pops. I do wish they weren't so serious and "minimal" with its design though. It's a gameboy after all.

I was able to preorder last year so I'm hoping I get mine soon. Haven't received a shipping notification yet so not sure what's going on. They were supposed to ship yesterday.

I did have a MODE in the Saturn but I ended up putting it in the Dreamcast because I still wanted to use the disc drive for my physical games. For a while I was using burned discs with a flashed action replay but I was curious about the satiator so I got one. So far it’s pretty neat.

For anyone who doesn’t want to spend a couple of hundred dollars on a Satiator or MODE, you can flash an action replay cartridge with Psuedo Saturn Kai and play burned CDs. Lots of options for the Saturn

I might get the Pocket at a later date once it is jailbroken + custom cores.

Can I be your friend, hah? I'll give you a black one once mine arrive in 2025 or whenever they finally ship the newer batches :)

Looking at prices on eBay ($1,000 on hand), I’m questioning my decision to just give it away to a friend.

Out of curiosity I was looking up prices for the Atari Lynx since I do have one from the 90s. Turns out it's a particularly rare item that goes for $200 or more on ebay. Who knew? I barely played mine but I think what's notable is that it can be flipped around so you can use the directional controls on the right hand

I got my two in group A. Forgot to get accessories so all that stuff is in group B.

I dunno if any of the accessories other than the adapters matter to me and I suspect the inevitable jailbreak will be more convenient than me pulling out gamegear games :). I'd rather get a third party screen protector and I'm certain there are better cases that will pop up for cheap.

Yeah I hope that happens soon also. I do need that tempered glass though. Maybe I'll put a wet protector on it in the meantime. @zerodeefex let me know if you find a decent screen protector.

Group B probably because the cart wasn’t working for me right at first. I can now forget about this for another year

Wait sorry, is the Analog pocket being sold for $1,000 on ebay? Wtf... I just don't get it. Retroarch with CRT filters and run ahead input lag is just something I can never leave.
