I started watching this yesterday @Pharmaboy and your right, this is just good fun. This sequence you are highlighting above zero's in on it on of the reasons why - how this characters natural "flatness" and economic dialogue is not just "filled in" with these sorts of methods, but rather crucial to who/what he is. The show can be uneven, in that sometimes they pull it off and other times there it comes across with a bit of soap okra stiffness, but overall its keeping me wanting to keep viewing.

Haven't watched anything with Meryl Streep in it for quite a few years. She is the epitome of a Hollywood super-wierdo. Same for that hypocrite Matt Damon.

It's all a rumor mill at this point. Allegedly it's down to a bake-off between Tom Hardy (44 yrs old) and Henry Cavill (38 yrs old). Allegedly Idris is still in the running, but at 49 yrs old, he might be a bit old to take on a role that chronically stretches to multiple tentpole pictures.

Daniel Craig did 5 Bond films. The first was in 2006 when he was 38. These roles are insanely taxing, no matter what great a condition the person is in.

I love everything Idris has been in that I've seen, but I suspect Tom Hardy will be the pick for a 2-3 picture deal. He's perhaps the best actor of the lot, though with British actors, who typically are stage- and academy-trained & over-prepared for most film roles, I'm not sure that's saying so much.

Didn't Broccoli say the next Bond would be less womanizing/in line with today's standards or something? You could see that kind of creeping into No Time To Die a little, but apparently alot of it was cut out after the backlash to the first trailer. It'll be interesting to see just how much of Bond's persona survives the next iteration.

they could just make the villain a pretty lady and do this scene over again. 'Cause it certainly endeared me to the franchise the first time they did it. </s>

I knew what scene it would be before I even clicked it! Symbolic of what was to come.

I took @ColtMrFire's advice and watched Breaking Bad into the 3rd season, about 1/2 way through. I must admit it still wasn't doing much for me, so it has been put out to pasture. Different strokes and all.

OTOH, I started watching The Sopranos tonight. I'm just 4 episodes into the 1st season. It's already a winner for me. I like shows with dark humor, which this show seems to have in abundance. Also, the scenes with Tony S. and his shrink are fantastic giving great insight into his character.

@roughroad I would almost urge you to at least finish S3 and if you're still not hooked, then the show probably isn't for you. But S3 is all about the buildup to the finale. That's why I mentioned it specifically before, as this is where BB started to become iconic/popular with audiences with each successive season somehow being even better. But it's obviously your call. Just love seeing people discover this show.

I’m kind of glad he’s not. Not because he couldn’t do it, but fake diversity denies the opportunity for new ideas to come to light. How much better was Black Panther than if they’d just made made Superman black and called it done? Give him a movie about a black super spy that isn’t beholden to all of the Bond tropes. Same goes for a female Bond except we already had the pretty excellent Atomic Blonde.

@Pharmaboy just grab HBO max for a month or two and scratch that itch. Life is too short to punish yourself like that.

"fake diversity denies the opportunity for new ideas to come to light"

    (scratching my head)

I prefer, "Genuine diversity opens up opportunities for new ideas to come to light"

I loved the idea of Idris Elba as Bond because he's a gifted, charismatic actor, more than physically able to carry the role. Current age aside, he would light the screen up as Bond IMO. It helps to remember that Sean Connery was not universally welcomed to the Bond role in his day. The idea of a lowly Scot playing this role (originally written as a Brit gentleman-fighter combatting hostile superpowers) was not popular in some circles in the UK.

As for Black Panther, it's short-sighted to see it as equal to black Superman for a black audience. BP was way more than that. It was new black mythology in an Afrocentric manner for audiences whose descendants were denied all things. The most impressive characters in BP are heroic in deed, also true royalty, exalted persons in their homeland (refreshing).

IMO a black Superman is a great idea so long as the black actor in question is gifted, charismatic, and physically able to carry the role...and the production has something new/different to say about a character who's been done to death for decades.

PS: Atomic Blonde is pretty amazing. I also greatly enjoyed Steven Soderbergh's HAYWIRE, a somewhat comparable spy drama.

I suppose it depends on whether you think Bond is a thriving franchise or something whose creative momentum largely faded decades ago. I’d much rather see a new spy movie without all of the baggage. Elba as Bond is still Bond, Elba as a different spy in another movie has a chance to transcend that.

Which is why I said it was much better than if they’d just made a black Superman and called it a day. There aren’t unlimited chances to film big budget movies and studios are famously risk averse. If they think they've ticked the “black superhero” box already they’re much less likely to fund another one. And while studios would view a known property as less risky, if it did poorly it’d be viewed differently than if audiences were just bored with another Superman movie.

In short I’d much rather studios fund new stories which have the potential to offer more than just race or gender swapping an actor into an existing franchise that everybody already knows.

Loved HBO's Peacemaker - great casting all around with perfect blend of grit and humor. Wasn't sure what to expect of Cena's character following Suicide Squad (which I also loved), but it was definitely more satisfying to me compared to Disney's Marvel content which I understand needs to cater to a much broader audience.

Compared to their source comics which I've read for the past 30+ years, Marvel's cinematic stuff just seems too cute for its own good and shallow. Very profitable though, can't argue with its success worldwide. (And I've always had a soft spot for Deadpool which at least caters to an adult audience.)

The Book of Boba Fett was overall disappointing, but I can't get enough of The Mandalorian - genius casting Pedro Pascal, even without seeing his face 99% of the time I really dig his screen time.

Never really got deep into the Star Wars Universe, but started watching The Clone Wars animated series (in the correct chronological order, of course).

Finished two series that really hit the spot for me:
    • ARCHIVE81 (Netflix): It was inevitable that the creepy tone of the early and middle episodes would drop off a bit at the end, but I really like the script and the main players. I'm primed for the second season. And there has to be a second season. It's the only way to make sense of how things were left at the end of episode-8.
    • REACHER (Prime Video): This turned into a very kinetic, satisfying adapation of Lee Child's 1st Jack Reacher book. The leads are excellent and the vibe just about right for longtime fans of the Reacher books. I figure we have 3 to 5 more years of physical prime-time for star Alan Ritchson to do adaptations of Child's other books. I'm looking forward to it.
Beyond that I'm in one of those zones where most shows and films I start don't motivate me to keep going. I will try episode-2 of HIT & RUN (Netflix) because the three Israeli leads are quite good. And soon I'll start MIDNIGHT MASS (Netflix) based on positive comments here and elsewhere.

Kimi was a decent little film. It's a HBO max movie. The story isn't perfect but it's relatable to the times in some ways. I think there have been something in the same realm happen. Not so much her situation but, the device part.
