Bah. Edward Scissorhands, emo, Madonna. Pretty sure bears are part of the ad and not for sale.

I'd worry more about Rick and Morty or South Park, especially the episodes featuring Mr. Garrison.

The bears are actually hand-held accessories from Balenciaga’s Spring 2023 collection:

However, the fuss isn't just about kids & bears, but also about this:

Why would one use legal documents about child pornography in an advertising campaign?
Only to provoke and attract attention? Maybe. But seems pretty weird, tbo.

I didn't even know what the brand was, looked them up on Wikipedia and got as far as "a high-end luxury fashion house" and immediately stopped reading because I don't care. Maybe I'm stereotyping, but I'm assuming that this is just a stupid "no such thing as bad publicity" grab. If I'm wrong, meh, still don't care.

I can't find the Supreme Court (arguably just as much about free speech - I remember this from 2008) case documents in any the above photos with the kids. It that an "easier egg" somewhere?

Ya maybe smart or whatever like most other finance people, but to IMO still doesn't mean he's or any one finance person in particular trustworthy.

I also napkin math'd it once long ago when I first heard his claims and it wasn't a "close enough seems plausible" type of thing. More of a "guy is trying to do some believable BS'ing for some reason just not sure what yet" kind of math. My napkin math may be wrong, and I may be wrong although I don't really care if I am on this b/c at the end of the day, just got "don't trust me" vibes from the guy. The napkin math was to see if I was just being too judgemental so to say.

Am also curious about what discussion will come up about Iran's recent happenings is right now in this thread. Actually surprised it hasn't happened already.

Kudos to their team for not singing the anthem knowing full well that crazy religious police authority could severely punish / kill them, their families, or whatever else at home. Takes a lot of balls. All for an abstract concept of better treatment of women. Apparently a lot more than these teams that seem to be feigning outrage over "no gays in qatar"...

[delete actually politically incorrect comment here to self censor... will un-delete if I still want to post it after sober again].

The Edward Scissorhands or bondage theme inspired fashions have been around for a while. I remember some of this stuff from the 90s. Balenciaga has had in recent shows models wearing rubber outfits. Pretty sure I remember Kim Kardashian wearing dominatrix stuff in the past few years. It could be an in-thing right now. That's high fashion. They will try different things and see what sticks.

I doubt it's a bad publicity grab. More like they were trying to be edgy, but didn't expect this to blow up.

The funny thing is where was Tucker Carlson when Disney was essentially selling sex to kids. I guess the purity rings deflected from that.

Anyway, I'm headed to London and Manchester for business in January. Going to pick up a Balenciaga beanie because it will be cold. I bet the material will feel fantastic.

As far as I'm concerned clothes are clothes, though certain fashions do come with connotations. I like wearing blazers and denim jackets cuz they come with many, many pockets to stuff odds and ends and tiny DAPs acting as LDAC receivers in, but at the same time I'm inclined to don less conventional attire that may occasionally raise eyebrows (punk's not dead).

As far as the Balenciaga stuff goes, it's weird but (thank god) not nearly as creepy as what you might catch in weeb circles— those need purging.

Kids pageants are rife with people that need to be put on watchlists and parents that put their kids under high pressure to atone for the parents' lacking fulfillment. Not always the case, but it seems unnervingly common.

As alluded to in another post, I used to sail, and, standing up in my cold, wet, English day gear, I worth far far more than any other clothes I owned, formal or casual. And my gear was only coastal/off-shore, not ocean-going, which would have been in a different league*.

I used to wear it over my suit, going to the office too.

Probably, I couldn't avoid some "Musto" or whatever, labelling, but I refuse to be a hoarding and having to pay for it, so generally would scorn anything proclaiming its name. I hate that.

*And, I'm told, ski wear is even more expensive than sailing!

According to the article I linked to, it's in a different photo from their ad campaign (the one with the handbag). Anyway, those photos have since been taken down, so it's pretty much water under the bridge.

The Senate was a compromise put in the Constitution designed to give slave states more power. Everything else about it, from the mythos of "representing the states" to "preventing tyranny of the majority" was retroactively invented by whatever interests felt it benefitted them.

Back when the Senate was appointed by state legislatures it was extremely corrupt. We were not better off.

Having gerrymandered state legislatures appoint senators sounds a lot worse than having a straight popular vote that cannot be gerrymandered. That is the one good thing about the Senate right now. As unfair as the state boundaries are at representing voters, at least they cannot be made MORE unfair with the flick of a pen like they are in the House.

I probably would shift a lot of power from the Senate to the House... but only after massive electoral reforms occurred in the House.

It seems to me that in this century, the age of the internet shock value and conversion rate are becoming more important than having some "sense." Nope, manipulate the algorithm, get those hits and/or transactions.

I grew up in a Christian family where the occult was wrong and to be banned. Well I still discovered weird shit on my own because curiosity beat taboo, especially with young people. Now imagine how certain holy books contain passages that would make most non-religious parents vomit. (I am not joking.) Some preachers liked to shock, then get all the applause from that big audience and emotional responses led to many gifts. The -ism does not matter, the processes have gotten faster.

This year I mostly lived under my own rock. The more you realise where the nuance and/or context is, the less you bother with the tribes, groups, woke-isms. Someone benefits somehow. Sometimes that someone gets a lot of attention like Elon Musk, sometimes that person goes unnoticed.

    I need more music.

Glad I was wrong about him not getting arrested. Time to see what kind of penalty he gets now... hopefully it's not a slap on the wrist.

He's gonna fry. Madoff bamboozled people from his own community and died in prison. Holmes and Balwana got eleven and fifteen years respectively. WorldCom guys got around fifteen years for cooking the books - Ebbers had a month free after prison before he died.

SBF takes it to a whole 'nother level. Bamboozled many many big names in VC. Also went in front of Congress assuring them that his secret to success was top tier risk management. Used popular sports figures as tools to promote his scam. He embarrassed the richest, the most powerful, and the most popular people in the country. No amount of political funding raising or "make tons of money for compassionate giving" is going to help. By the time his trial hits, the winds in the White House will have changed direction. He's fucked and he's said all too much already, all of it will be used against him in court.

I'd say throw his parents in jail too, for enabling this sociopath: https://www.businessinsider.com/sam...ed-bahamas-hearing-reportedly-laughed-2022-12

10-15 years seems like a slap on the wrist to me for the amount of money stolen. Not to mention damage to crypto as a whole and I'm sure some big $$$$ guy could argue that this will negatively impact their future ability to do business etc. On top of that, IMO there is a chance he will take a deal to reduce his sentence to something like <10. At first he just seemed like a un-trustworthy person out to scam and it seems like historically many of these people take deals if they know they're busted. However, as time has gone on, it seems like he drank too much of his own kool-aid, started sociopathic and didn't need the kool-aid, or he actually is that crazy - all of which will probably result in he won't take the deal. Hopefully the latter so he isn't taking a deal for a 5 year sentence with some 11:59PM type stuff like "Uh actually I know exactly where most of that money is and I'll help people get their money back for an easier sentence."

On the flip side, IIRC for these federal prison sentences, they serve at least 80% of the sentence and can get the rest off on good behavior. So at least it won't be 6 months in prison with the rest on probation or suspended, etc.
