Torpedo III will be out by year's end, I'd say hang on until then... There is apparently a higher priced model with cinemag transformers as well.

Heya everyone, I am new at tube rolling and I just received a pair of AMPEREX ORANGE GLOBE 6DJ8 ECC88 VACUUM TUBE 1969 MATCH PAIR for my Valhalla 2 but I am not sure which slots they go in, the front or the back. The Amperex Orange globes are smaller tubes like the V2’s front tubes, they are not large like the V2’s larger tubes in the back 2 slots.

Can someone tell me which slots I place the AMPEREX ORANGE GLOBE 6DJ8 ECC88 VACUUM TUBES in? The front 2 slots, or the back 2 slots?

Please see attached pic to help better understand what I am trying to ask.

V2.jpg Thank you very much for your help.

Based on what I read in the Valhalla 2 Manual they should go in the front towards the volume knob.

Also, I would love to measure the Valhalla 2, but can't cuz I don't have it :(

Just received an email from Nick at Schiit, and you both are correct, the orange globes go in the front slots of the V2. Thank you so much again ultrabike and felib

I installed the AMPEREX ORANGE GLOBE 6DJ8 ECC88 VACUUM TUBE 1969 MATCH PAIR tubes in the Valhalla 2 and for the first few days they were very quiet. But today I noticed some hiss and some intermediate popping sounds. Is this normal until burn in occurs? I received a note from the seller stating that there may be hiss and/or hum until burn0in but it didn't mention any popping sounds. I just wondered if this is normal until burn-in occurs. The other issue could be is that I also just upgraded to Windows 10 today, so I cannot rule out if Windows 10 is causing the popping sounds -but my guess is it's the tubes. Can any one help me or let me know if this is normal for old NOS tubes?

On the transformer buzzing, maybe DC offset on your AC lines. Does this happen at all times of the day and night? Do you have dimmers or other devices such as computers? Turn off stuff one by one and see if there's anything specifically causing it.

ok I will try that. I do not have dimmers, just the PC. The popping only started happening today. I just upgraded to windows 10 and just downloaded the windows 10 driver for the bifrost, and do not know if that will help or not. Like I said though, the tubes are pretty old (1969) and I was told there could be hum/hissing until the tubes are burnt-in (about 50 hours). But didn't start hearing the popping sounds until today after I upgraded to Windows 10.

I've experienced the popping thing. Kind of seems scary, but it should go away from a while.

Popping is certainly not normal and 1969 is hardly old for a NOS tube. Is the popping noise in one or both the channels? Have you tried switching the tubes?

Thank you purrin and thank you gurubhai for your replies, they are very helpful and I appreciate you guys trying to help me fix this problem. It's seems like it is in the right channel. There is also a lot of hiss, kind of like the hiss of a record player. As far as switching tubes, the stock V2 tubes do not have any issues except the buzzing sound I get from the v2, but that is most likely some outside interference like purrin and others suggested and possible an isobar or humX could remedy that. I did contact the seller (he sells only tubes and I have talked with him several times, he seems to know a lot about tubes). He told me that hissing/distortion.hum is common until about 50 hours of burn-in then they will sound really good., but he did not mention anything about popping sounds. I write him early this morning and waiting on his reply.

I meant switching the tubes so that the current right channel tube is placed into the left channel and vice versa. If the popping shifts to left channel, that should indicate that the problem lies with that particular tube and exclude extraneous causes.

While we resolve Jeremy's issue, has anybody actually tried the LISST on the input tubes for the Valhalla 2? Schiit says it does work. Essentially you convert the amp into a SS input, Tube output OTL amp, which is quite interesting (though probably doesn't sound very good).

Maybe a mjolnir 2 or lyr 2 owner with the lisst could lend one to one of us v2 owners? Kinda expensive for the v2 though. That kind of money could get you some decent tubes.

Yeah the price of LISST only is out of my range, this was more directed towards somebody with both Valhalla 2 and a LISST based Lyr 2 or Mjolnir 2 :)
