As some of you know, Ety quietly announced a refresh of the ER4 at AXPONA 2016 last weekend, now sporting MMCX cables

    http://www.enjoythemusic.com/AXPONA_2016/AXPONA_2016_Show_Report/Etymotic_Research_ER4XR_ER4SR.htm

FYI an engineer from Ety has dropped by the ER4 thread on HF to comment, start from this post: http://www.head-fi.org/t/538615/if-...this-is-the-thread-for-you/7365#post_12521141. Always nice to hear from engineering themselves on new product.

Would love to see if the ER4XR comes closer to that Harman target.

    Relevant snippets about the tuning:
The ER4XR sounds like it could be quite nice.

The original ER4S were my first serious "headphones" (okay, today we call them IEMs). I used them with the 2nd generation HeadRoom Supreme, which I still have ... complete with its ability to run on 4 internal AA cells (for MAYBE an hour!) AND the external 4x D-cell battery box when that was a new thing ... and a CD-player in one of Headroom's custom made system bags.

That ER have updated this model is very interesting. And, while I don't see letting go of the E4RS (more than earned it's keep at this point), I'll definitely be checking the new models out!

Ha! Back in the day, when HeadRoom was the first consumer dealer for Etymotic---the ER4 started out as a spare part for one of their audiology test equipment systems, and then got popular among film field recordists---we sold over a million bucks worth of ER4 in the first 18 months.

Called Etymotic yesterday and should be receiving some samples soon.

I also started out with the 4s plus headroom amp and bag. I carried it around as a murse. I had a summer job doing grounds and maintenance for a factory where I mowed a HUGE lawn. I'd have the Etys in under my muffs, the headroom bag over my shoulder, listening to tunes all damn day. Such good times. I'll probably buy the new model even if the reviews are terrible, which I'm sure they won't be.

Too bad Etymotic didn't invest in a new housing!

Joe Woj Was the engineer on the HeadRoom amps for a long time. He's doing the new one as well. A damned fine audio engineer, maybe not famous in the biz, but a good engineer regardless.

Has anyone else had the plastic parts on their Etymotic earbuds go all sticky and weird after a few years?

Output toggle? Trying not to get my hopes up but if these outputs are XLR and it's reasonably priced I'm all ears.

Yes they did - they are aluminum now with recessed sockets.

They did! It is made of metal now and looks... exactly the same.

EDIT: God damnit page non-refresh! @M3NTAL already pointed this out. Carry on.

Oh man, back before headfi I used to linger on the Headroom webpage dreaming about gear. I used to think the BitHead was maybe the furthest I'd let myself go in this hobby... ah to be innocent again.

Oh man, the BitHead. What a wonderful, totally not ergonomic device. I remember having an email exchange with someone at Headroom about taking the board out of it and re-casing it to make better sense on a desktop. Good times, good times.
