I put my name down on the waiting list for the Speedmaster CK2998 Limited Edition, but really unsure I'll get the opportunity since I have no purchase history with Omega Boutiques (only source for this model).

There is another that must be shown:









There's a story behind this, which is that the astronauts of Apollo 13 themselves gave Omega watch co. a "silver snoopy award" as thanks for the role their watches played in getting them home safely (they famously used their wrist watch to time an critical 14 second engine burn when main systems were down--which is why there is a 14sec sector on the watch).

it was a limited edition and quickly sold out, but these are available for about $15000...

To be totally honest, I would wear the hell out of this watch.

 

hey @Kunlun - what is your opinion on Tag Heuer Watches? Do you like them?

 

Visited south Germany a few days ago and had a blast browsing through many watch shops. One thing which constantly annoys me in these shops is lighting. It's usually very bright point lighting which makes just about any watch look super shiny and chrome. In my opinion it gives a very unnatural look which catches the eye, but doesn't tell much how these watches will look in everyday conditions.

There are a few TAGs I like


They have some in-house movements now and are well-made and sporty.

However, they are in a kind of mid-fi purgatory zone for mechanical watches.
As with any watch, buy it if you really love it. President Obama has a TAG he wore a lot before becoming president. But buy smartly (not msrp) as it won't keep any sort of value. Not that any watches tend to! But a Rolex, for example, will do so much better than most. So, buy to own rather than to flip.

Since we're on an Omega kick, someone posted a talk an Omega official gave during a dinner lecture on the real story of how the Omega Speedmaster became the first official NASA watch.

if you skip down a little, the fellow from Omega gets into how NASA tested the watches from several companies and only the Omega survived, basically! While there are a 1001 Speedmasters as the bread-and-butter of Omega, they've wisely kept a watch quite similar to this original and still NASA -approved watch continuously available. You can buy it today and it's in space (now used by Russian cosmonauts) pretty much as we speak (or, at least, it's still being used to this day).

This was back when Omega was really one of the preeminent watch companies. They have every right to be proud. Things slipped in the 70s and Omega lost its way with Rolex becoming ascendant in the entry-level luxury / high-end tool watch market. Omega was saved by being bought by Swatchgroup (Swatch did this for a number of companies to save Swiss watchmaking) and now Omega is trying to regain prestige in ways that are good (high quality watches, interesting movements) and not as good (raising prices very aggressively when poor resale value shows msrp to be far from actual market value). Interesting times now for watches and interesting stories from the past!

I like the bluish steel dial, but the white is nice and the dive watch has a 70s vintage vibe.

 

What everyone in NYC should know:

If you wear a gold Cartier watch with a diamond bezel (with jeans and a backpack) and fall asleep on the subway, people will take a picture of your watch and post it here!

For something on the completely opposite end of the price spectrum from everything else here, my favorite watch that I own is a limited edition HMT Pilot:


HMT is an Indian company that makes dirt cheap hand-wind watches. This was $30 through a group buy organized on WUS. I don't wear it very often because I scratched the dome acrylic crystal and haven't gotten around to fixing it.

That is very nice. The best thing about it is how readable it is.

Since my last watch gave out, I have become accustomed to looking at my phone if I want to tell the time. In this climate, also, watch straps get very sweaty and the leather ones don't last long. However, before I gave up entirely on the idea of wrist watches, I had fancied some of the products from a company called Skagen, particularly, something like this...




The bracelet is a fine mesh, which I like a lot more than the cluncky-lump traditional bracelets. These watches are not exactly one of my friend's five-pound street-market specimens, but they are affordable, and very handsome

However, it never worked out. My wrists are very small. Leather will flex and fit, but this bracelet does not. Also, the mens'-range watches are quite large and look silly on me. The ladies'-range, although not terribly feminine, are just not quite right.

The deal breaker was that, even the big-face models had fine hands with little contrast against the face: I could not (edit!) tell the time at a glance. Finding out the time meant putting on the spectacles. So my phone remains my timepiece.

I could probably read the time on that Pilot close up to my face in the dark!

ps... Rs.2400 in India: about US$36.

Here's a quartz watch which was a gift from patients-a couple struggling with infertility. I helped (all kidding aside), and they gave me this watch when their first child was born:

A nice memory to go with the watch.

 

The sistem51 is alright. It's interesting from a technological standpoint, but in use feels pretty chintzy.

I love the G-Shock. It's a very readable analogue and the compass has actually been useful while hiking. As much as anything, I use the timer a lot for making tea at work. The thermometer isn't terribly useful, since you've got to take it off for at least half an hour before you get an accurate reading. The only thing I wish it had is the ability to set the time from atomic radio clocks, but on the other hand, that feature has never worked very well on the other G-Shock I've owned.
