    I have a question.
What are you atempting to acomplish with these rigs?
Like what is the basic principles you are using to design them?
I might make a better one than my cardboard box now, but im wondering, what is the rig trying to do, why are they generaly tubes with a bunch of foam in them?

My first measurement rig :D. Cheap & easy mic from ojneg ==> Behringer umc404-hd ==> REW. Been playing with my beyer dt770 while learning REW and measurement meanings. below are some measurements of stock and tweaked dt770

The foam is to minimize interference from other noises like resonance off the plate. They use specific foam to get a better seal as well, simulates the seal a headphone makes in real world use. I think the tube is just a matter of convenience, fits pads well on the ends and does not interfere headband when mounting

Curious if you ever tried the latex? I dont know about body paint but other paint types do maintain a malleable rubber feel(like #7) after they cure. Might be able to apply multiple layers to a chunk of semi firm foam and get a decent seal.

I have not tried the latex because my initial decision of trying USB microphones changes my setup decisions especially the size of the unit .

Not to be funny, but the surface of Some nom-latex "skin" condoms may be a better surface material...
    Just a thought.

Experimenting with my measurement set up, this seems to give me accurate results.
Leather with an ear sized piece of felt, with a smaller felt circle on top. This will give a nice seal if the headphones go all the way around the ear, but if they have stupidly small ear cut outs, it will not make a full seal with the leather.
Still need to get a better mic than my receiver mic, need to get something for phantom power for the sbaf recomended mic im building

    Done with my rig.

Made the mic as shown in the thread, now I just need phantom power.
Uses leather and felt coupler, same as shown in above pose
    Back with XLR connector

Serious design flaw with my design. The vinyl picks up any slight vibrations, even a little breeze, and transmits it to the mic. Im going to have to redesign it....

Yeah. But if I blow on the vinyl, with headphones over the mic, its jumps from 30db to 50db. So yeah...
I guess ill have to use a more normal, less cool looking material. Probably just use wood or something.

For anyone looking into the Primo EM172 mics, I attempted to order a pair from frogloggers and my ordered has remained "Awaiting Fulfillment" for over 2 weeks now. Do not recommend them, it seems they are asleep at the wheel.

Well it probably takes a long time for the frogs to chop down the trees and transport them. I cant image a frog being able to carry much weight.

Ill keep half the vinyl. Finaly got around to revising my design, record for non mid'ed earcup, wood with my same leather/"ear" seems to give me nice, accurate measurements.
Ill be sure to measure everything I get my hands on.
I appoligize for bad image quality, my phone is broken, had to use bad camera I had.

And measurements of my Grados, and my T50's I tried to make sound like my grados. Not too bad.
    Mabey better than the grados.

Yeah it's basically a cheap Chinese clone of the lcd3 pre fazor driver more or less, ortho wall out da ass. The spike preceding it stock was painful though.

Thanks @cskippy for the advice in the Utopia thread

I have a umik-1 and an Dayton iMM-6. UMIK-1 is a USB mic, so getting input into the computer and REW is easy. The iMM-6 is analog and I don't have a USB interface, but my computer does have an analog in jack. Given these mics and the equipment I have, any recommendation on which mic to build a rig around?

I used the UMIK-1 as it also has a calibration file which is easy to load and will be really accurate.

Thanks. The imm-6 also has a calibration file. Other than it being smaller, the USB based UMIK-1 is probably a better mic. I've read where people use the iMM-6 with a Surface Pro and REW, and the portability is pretty useful for speakers and subs
