If this is a genuine successor to the HD650, then they will have my money. Very cool.

Wow come on this is Sennheiser. I bet it's no more than $1700. I'm sure at least this will be a hit for going to CES :)

    Seriously.

On a happier note, maybe we will see used HD800s for $600 soon.

Does the metal grill look a bit different? I'd like to see the ear side of the headphone.

looks identical, axel grell said they added a "sound absorber (aka Rabid Dog mod)" to even out the higher frequency and improve treble and bass extensions

hdvd800 also updated with direct stream dildo support (yaaaay?)

oh also they are including a balanced cable as well as the 1/4" So there will probably be a pretty big price increase

why not just go with a single 4pin xlr and then a quarter inch adapter? :/

    hello,

this is very interesting indeed. first Fostex seemingly taking a look at the T50RP modding industry (i'm thinkin' the biggest influence being Mr. Speakers) and now the all mighty Sennheiser looking at the HD 800 modding community and both making changes to their products.

maybe we have more influence than we think?

Maybe Dan from Mr Speakers but also can't forget Luis from Enigmatic. I actually thought someone posted that it was indeed Luis's mod they took the idea from.

U have to admit the hd700 does look like a deformed love child of a hd600 and hd800. Sounds like one too

Pfft, if it measures the same as an HD800 with the mods, and they jack up the price of the 800s, then what's the point.

... and finally it's black in color. So other than announcing a kind of OEM ver. of popular CS mod, it's also an OEM ver. of Colorware?
oh wait they also included OEM XLR cable, that alone cost $340-ish I think.

If it measures the same as the mod and charge customers for $3k, then what they do is... Charging us an extra $1400 for a factory-cut shelf liner and a black paint job.

From the video of Axel Grell that Currawong posted.
"What you can see clearly, the colour is different, it's black. |\/| But that's not the major improvement ... the major improvement is improvement of the sound. So we've added an acoustical absorber that makes the whole high frequency range more even, flatter, so it's a little more extended as well. The low frequency range is extended too. So in total, just little things we have changed, but the sound  is a little bit better."

Edit: I was transcribing when @eddypoon already posted the YT video.

It's funny. I asked Tyll about this last week on his site:

"Do you think any of the decision-makers at Sennheiser are aware of the HD800 modding being done by the enthusiast community? I'm recently on the "mod" bandwagon and I really do wonder what Sennheiser's internal reaction to the modding is. Have you had any "on the record" conversations with them about modding the HD800 that you would be able to share? I'd love to know what they think."

and got this from Tyll in response:

"I'm pretty sure they're aware of the mods. Their problem is that they have to build headphones that they can warranty for years. The felt in the ear cup will be exposed to sweat and humidity they may cause it to degrade over time, or maybe start smelling. Sennheiser, quite understandably, probably doesn't want to deal with those kinds of issues.

None the less, I do mention this mod whenever I talk about the HD 800, mainly for the reader, but I am quite aware of my words potentially reaching the era of Sennheiser engineers in hopes of influencing them to continue to work hard solving issues like this. Wouldn't it be cool to see Sennheiser come out with their own mod for the HD 800!? Never happen, but fun to think about."

    I love it.
