Here are some pictures of my new prototype philharmonitors with beryllium tweeters in place of oem raal. These are supposed to be new not b stock . I was told that there was some minor damage to the baffle underneath the woofer on one speaker from a tight fit as well as some damage to the rear port which I haven't posted pictures of. I asked to get it fixed but the guy who does the baffle routing isn't around so in the end I was given a 100 discount without seeing any pictures.

What I received is way worse than I imagined. There is debris and hair on the drivers and major chip damage on the baffle by tweeter and woofer. My main concern is whether this will affect the sound and if I have to clean the drivers. I am also concerned about resale value. I just received the speakers today and have been in too bad of a mood to listen to them. I also have the option of returning, but will probably have to pay for shipping.

Have you contacted the vendor to discuss this with them?

Damn! I would not keep those, regardless of the impact that gunk had on performance. Blows that you'll be out the dough for shipping 'em back, of course. :(

if they misrepresented the condition, they should cover your shipping costs, but that's me...

Not just you. I understand having the customer pay shipping on returns because they didn't want the product in the correct condition, but this is a return due to their errors. They should pay for the return shipping.

Unfortunately, I'd be willing to bet that the vendor is gonna give him the runaround. "Well, I did tell you that there was some minor damage. So I've got to process this as a standard refund, you understand." Typical caveat emptor malarkey.

The fact is, something in that shabby condition should never have been available for public sale. o_O

The vendor specified where and what the damage was, and this is beyond that.

Worst case you could dispute the charge with your CC company.

yep, CC companies take the side of the individual in these cases, especially if there's documentation. hope it doesn't go to those depths, not fun for anyone involved.

I hope this isn't from Dennis as his quality control is WAY above this. This is practically an insult.

Well, for protos this happens. These are literally experiments in his workshop. how much did you pay? Dennis is usually really good about making it right. I have the first proto BMRs and shipping wrecked them. He took em back and fixed them on his dime.

The hair and debris is odd. I'm unsure of what to clean that with. I'd use a wipe but I'm not careful. I mean, talk to Dennis. He's generally really nice about his products. Also, take a listen and see what they sound like.

If you can get the drivers clean, I'd cover them up and call it a day. I don't think this model will be put into production and it looks like one hell of a one off.

This looks horrible. I would really try to get it fixed.
I'd imagine you can clean the tweeter with a soft brush, but I'm not sure.

I guess it's "new" because it was a prototype never sold to anyone before, but there's really no such thing as a new prototype. Looks as expected. I've used that exact woofer before. It's got a sticky coating / treatment on it. Sooner or later, it's gonna get cat hair, head hair, public hair, and dust all over it. Ditto with the tweeter surround. BTW, those drivers are not cheap. I'm not familiar with the make of that tweeter, but parts cost for the drivers alone is probably $1000 for the pair. Add another a few hundred more for the crossover parts, wiring, connects, chassis, and the guy hired to do the baffle routing.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about it if you got a good deal. The dude doesn't make audio jewelry.

The main reason I am upset is because I was lied to about the condition of the speakers. I wish Dennis had shown me some pictures considering how beat up these are.

I have no doubt that he is a nice guy and makes great speakers. I don't want to discourage anyone from buying his products or anything like that. I do feel like he handled this transaction poorly and I have asked for a refund and paid return.

I don't ever buy audio in this condition because it will always bother me, be a huge pita to sell and will probably have an impact on performance. A few hundred dollars discount is not commensurate with this level of damage and headache in the future.

Honestly, ill take em off your hands. Don't ship em back to Dennis yet. Tell him I'll buy them. The deal for these is bonkers.

@zerodeefex send me a pm and we can work it out. Ill talk to dennis as well. I have to warn you that they look worse in person and that in my opinion there is some distortion going on in one of the tweeters probably from the gunk. The low end is bonkers though. Jimmy is coming to my house now to listen to them so you can ask him about it as well.

No canned air? I'll PM you. If they are audibly broken, definitely return them, otherwise I'm happy to pick them up.
