I'm listening again, this time to the phono. They got some new records because the ones this morning were in poor shape. This is a decent entry level phono. Certainly doesn't have all the fine detail vinyl is capable of transmitting, but pair this with a U-Turn (which they've done at the show), and you're looking at a solid entry level vinyl setup.

True, but reading Stoddard's giant online book, I get the feeling they want to keep the variations in their chassis sizes to a minimum. The Jotun's case is new, and I can see the possibility that their 2-channel amp having a different chassis than Yggdrasil and Raggy. So, there is hope they will make a taller stack.

Even though Jotun's chassis is cheaper, it is still a new part and I guess, a sizable investment in their new product. I hope Jotun does well so we can see what they do if they decide to make a bigger sibling.

EDIT: Fixed a horribly written sentence.

I don't get the new chassis. Certainly I understand keeping the cost down and I've always appreciated that about Schiit. But why not keep the same chassis as bifrost, asgard etc? It's already been done, no RD required and stacks with existing products. I don't think Jotun stacks with anything.

There are always compromises when you reduce the BOM. The Bifrost Multibit got a lot of early hype but suffered in comparison to its stablemates and its price puts it in a really crowded space. The Modi Multibit seems to be pretty universally well liked, at least in part because its cheap enough that expectations aren't as high.

The Joto would probably have been better received here without the expansion slot, because people are focusing on the tradeoffs that had to be made to fit something in that chassis rather than the cheaper, more compact, fully balanced amplifier, but we're not really the market for an AIO device.

I love: (big time paraphrased) Yeah was sitting there staring at stacks of unused balanced 4gang high-end pot's, after ordering 2000 and the mjolnir sales fell off a cliff. Let's build something new! :D

It'd stack okay with the Bifrost, although the shallower depth isn't optimal. Width is the same, and height doesn't matter. Jotun on top, of course.

I wonder if they ended up using them in Mjolnir 2 before this even came out, ultimately.

You mean people who didn't read the announcement, chose not to understand it, or refuse to manage their expectations?

Remind me why I should have any sympathy for those folks.

    Soooo

Not to be a party pooper but 1 thing..

    1. Joto in spanish means faggot... Maybe Jotun?... I don't know. Plugging a faggot is my forte. Maybe some folks are in the market for that.

Also at a show that everyone is excited to attend, an entry level amp isn't much of a show IMO. But I think the amps functionality itself promises to be a game changer; providing a no brainer solution for those on a budget.

As of now though, I am really hoping that If I buy a rag I wont have remorse if they release an endgame dedicated hp amp. I am strongly considering one.

FWIW, I bought one with the phono stage. If @drfindley sells me his modibit (yes I call it that), I'll try to review both.

I sort of need to buy a BW2 as a point of comparison for SS reviews. I'm hoping this is versatile enough and resolving enough for me to use for all future reviews

@burnspbesq: Uh, I think @TwoEars was only suggesting that it's odd Schiit didn't have the rest of their arsenal on display alongside the Jotun. Not that they should've announced more new products. The former point doesn't seem that unreasonable to me. I generally agree with you, however, where the latter's concerned.

Not Schiit's job to deliver hype, only quality.

Overall, not what I was hoping for.

I'm more interested in the 2 channel gear that's upcoming. We will see...

I would also want a portable battery powered schiit amp. That would be nice.

Who said the amp itself was entry level? Careful readers of Jason's post will note that:

    1) the amp was originally set to slot between Mjolnir and the Ragnarok. This means the sound of the amp section is most likely phenomenal.

    2. This amp is the reason the Mjolnir is now a tube hybrid.

Anyone put their hand on one of these, how hot do they run?

Thanks by the way, great coverage :D Too bad head-fi spoiled the surprise.

Did Jason pull out the Rag CPU in the last revision or get it working? It wasn't quite clear in the chapter.

Good to know. My bad for calling it entry. The price is entry though....wrong to assume

Someone on Head-Fi posted a picture of their chapstick on top of the case for scale and mentioned that it runs much cooler than something like Asgard 2. (So as to not melt their chapstick.)
