Sitting at LAX waiting for the flight back to the bay so I will be brief.

Unfortunately Jotun was literally the only product they brought to the show that wasn't being given away in a raffle. As others have guess, someone is going to have to get this home and plug it in to other amps and DACs to figure out the relative strength of the DAC and amp sections.

From a gear perspective the meet was a bit of a disappointment, but the crowd was great. Really enjoyed getting to meet some of the so-cal SBAF crew, and the Schiit Team did a wonderful job with the location, food and setup.

More refined impressions to come tomorrow.

We all know they could make a "sandwiched" pancake dual board multibit, utilizing the new passive output stage to save space (no op-amps like the Moby). Hell yeah! :headbang:

@TMoney: Thanks for the diligent updates, man.

The same to everyone else who's done so! :punk:

Got some answers for @zerodeefex , Drank some margaritas, got picked for trivia, won a Valhalla 2. Just a typical Saturday for Nicholas Smith.

BTW Cavalli Audio confirmed for SBAFest. Thank you Warren.

Yes, I did some work when I was down here ;)

Hopefully the early Jotun buyers can answer this big question:
Is the Jotun resolving enough to be a dedicated preamp to the Yggdrasil dac?

Sorry I'm brainwashed by all of the overpriced gear out there, some of which I own/owned.

Actually this I wouldn't mind at all. Been wanting to spend more time with a Valhalla.

I'm sure the fact that the Jotunheim is a modular amp hasn't been lost on people.

If this amp was truly meant to be placed between mjo2 and rag, I feel as they are doing it a disservice by handcuffing it to the balanced 4490 Dac (which isn't bad) or starter phono pre. I certainly see the benefit of a desktop all in one package, but schiit kinda brought us all up to believe in modular systems (which jotol tech is) and that all in packaged Dac amps as one end of the package may not fit the preferred tastes of the other end. Wonder if this is a future standalone amp, like a balanced super Asgard, as zero's rid bit about place on the hierarchy intrigues me.

I assume they have done market research and this is the best way to expand their brand, but not sure if this is the product for enthusiasts like us were hoping for...

Looking forward to rmaf and rag2

I brought a Chord Mojo. Switching between Jotunheim's dual 4490 and the Mojo made for easy breezy AB-foshizzy.

I used ETHER-C 1.1 TP balanced for this comparison and found that the vrevety broom contributed positively to the bottom end and extended well to midbass enhancement typically missing from stock voicing. I've had Master-11, Liquid Carbon and have Asgard 2. Jotunheim has the best synergy with these cans to date in my experience. Master-11 was dry and sterile. Liquid Carbon added a fun factor but wasn't enough to offset the C's lean signature. I was content with how well Asgard paired until today.

Jotunheim's differential current topology seems to be tailor made for these planars. I brought 650 modded (SE) and 800S (Balanced & SE) stock and it was very obvious that there was some magic going on with one and not so much with the others.

Oh back to DAC. 4490 sounded pretty good! I had no real expectations as I've never heard any of the AKM chips. I tried it with Tidal iPhone and from the supplied MacBook (Air?). Staging was slightly narrow along with a tad less air compared to the Mojo. Primary difference was with bottom end authority and overall tonality - nod to the 4490. Upper mids and treble is somewhat of an issue for the C's, so I think the reported 4490 bloom works well in this case.

Given the size of the board they're using I don't think you can expect them to fit a Gungnir-level DAC in the Jotunheim yet. Give it a year or two and I'm sure they'll have something better. Of course, the definition of entry level will continue to shift in that time as well. Iron sharpens iron, and Schiit will continue to innovate.

That was one product they were considering developing this topology out into; instead they put it in a mid-priced amp. The imaginary $1K-ish version of this amp might have the same topology as this one, but it wouldn't be the same.

I'd be interested to know how the new amplifier handles 8 ohm high-efficiency speakers. On paper it would seem to have at least 3 to 4 watts available into 8 ohms, possibly more depending on the current ceiling (680 mA @ 16 ohms). However, this could be negated by short-circuit sensing circuitry.
