most be talking bout the older 421's maybe. not all altec woofers with alnico motors are bad. i like even lot of older compression drivers with alnico motors they had but, between alnico vs. ferrite debate these altec guys have, me personally to be honest, i couldn't tell too much difference at all when came to compression drivers swapping out diaphragms here and there. tested using 35480 and 35447(i believe is model number for the super lite models) on a alnico motor and ferrite motor... the altec 416 and some older 515's use alnico motors and do sound very good i think. don't have lot of power handling and don't reach ultra low unless in very large cab or horn cab but, do sound nice from low-bass to lower midrange before a proper compression driver and horn takes over the upper end portion... but, still need a good sub-woofer to take over the last couple of octaves if needed. the altec 417 i believe is called is only woofer that was used in exotic japanese marketed monitors i believe so, they're rare but, have one of lowest free air resonance of 17hz i believe which on it's own can reach pretty low...but, don't expect find any since it's the japanese for some reason has all the good altec and jbl stuff. they even have the good technics stuff over there.

i know some people swear by alnico stuff but, it doesn't matter to me if the overall driver sounds nice. neo though while nice is very expensive and does not handle heat as well as ceramic/ferrite motors do. that's why jbl went back to the trusted and famed 2226's and 2242's with the ferrite motors. besides costs, they tended to handle long term abuse lot better with lower power compression and lower tempertures.. i know jbl has the long throw excursion sub they call it which uses a neo but, i think they figured out how to keep it cool but, is only marketed for big theater installations under special order and i think the revel sub that is like 10k uses the same driver but, with rubber surround instead of peted cloth. for everything else they went back to ceramic/ferrite.
