One of the big things for me with head-fi was the constant barrage of PMs asking me to compare X and Y and Z pieces of gear. Eventually I just took down the list of equipment from my profile, but I'd still get like two or three messages a day asking for comparisons and/or advice,

Don't get me wrong, it's flattering and all that people think my opinions on this stuff matter enough to solicit, but I soon learned that 9 times out of 10, people asking for advice on head-fi already know what they want to buy. I'd say a few nice things about headphone Y but spend twice the space explaining why I didn't think it would suit them (given that you have to drag that info out of people: budget, preferences, equipment in their chain, etc.). At the end they'd thank me but end up buying headphone Y anyway.

They were just looking for someone to validate their decision, really.

By far the best PMs though were the creepers. I got asked out four times and proposed to twice during my tenure on head-fi.

I went a bulge too far...

Seriously, if anyone is triggered by my last post, and I mean triggered as opposed to bothered, I will remove it. There is a significant diifference between the two.

I went to bed just as the bans started flying. I dreamt of Marv purging the forum like this.

After my poor entrance I'm not quite sure how to proceed.
It doesn't feel right to now start asking for help and advice, and I don't know enough to give help and advice.
I'm already stuck as a filthy outcast leech, shit...

Have you considered introducing yourself in the new members thread, as many people here have suggested?

Bah, @Merrick beat me to it *hasty edit*

Once you've introduced yourself properly, ask a reasonable question or two in the right place, and relax. Lurk a bit, read stuff, mutter under your breath a bit. As long as you don't hulk out and start irritating the locals, you're probably fine :)

That's what I should have done originally, suppose I still can.
I thought it might be too late. "Hi I'm Hunched and I already have a bad rep here, look at my dislikes"

Look, if everyone here was run out on a rail for minor, correctable mistakes, no one would be here. We value people who can take some lumps, learn from it, and then learn how they can contribute. Be one of those people and you'll make it. Be one of the "But Marvey what about mah first amendment RIGHTS" types and you're gonna have a bad time.

This is a behavior that a lot of young youngs in "the hobby" have a hard time with at first. They are often making decisions with very tight funds and where a small misstep means they are stuck with disappointment for years. And while I love that I have so many trusted opinions here, I've come to learn that the most important part of making an audio decision is hearing it for myself. Thankfully we have a lot of giving and sharing people that have helped me come to these conclusions and many of yours. Eventually these padawans learn that a very respected ear usually can't be their own.

Don't sweat it. You made a mistake, it happens.

People who get banned from communities like this one often believe that they alone are the only people who are capable of recognizing a place by its true colors, and that everyone else is unenlightened. They'll usually be very vocal about that belief.

You can see this in their approach to discussion and disagreements, their tone and style of writing, and their general attitude -- it gets tiring really quickly.

Everyone's fine with someone who makes mistakes on occasion, but no one likes the guy who comes to a round table discussion thinking that they're always right. Just don't be that guy.

Usually when veterans here correct or share their experience with me I just go yes sir, no sir, and shut my mouth.

Maybe its the Confucius teaching ingrained in me.

What is SuperBAF all about? That's the question. SuperBAF is about friendships and relationships formed through shared interests. At the end of the day, I don't give a crap about the gear. It's the people that I care about the most. I flew to NY this week for work. The crew there, who I had never met before, rolled out the red carpet for me. This is what it's all about. Talking about shared interests. Making each other laugh. Forming friendships.

I automatically assume that people who register and post want to become an member of this community. This is a process that takes time. Sometimes it doesn't work out. No shame in that.

To make things clear: Rando's don't have any rights and this is a dictatorship. Always has been from the beginning. If you are a Rando, and I don't like you, or established members don't like you, you are gone. It's very simple.

The only difference now is that this forum is way too big for me to Mind Meld or pull off a Darmok and Jalad with every other Rando who doesn't get it; so I've decided to finally follow my own advice: ban people sooner rather than later. Four people in the last four days. I'm loving it. Less stress. Less wasted energy.

This is what I sheepishly try to explain to some people who seem to think this place is just one big constant circlejerk. What they don't seem to grasp is what they are essentially doing is walking up to a lunch table full of friends who already have their own established history, inside jokes and etiquette; stomping their feet and shouting tyranny. All it does is make everyone look at them sideways, laugh and move on.
