Please, remember to obtain permission from the girl before putting her in your home theater

And these days, you can nearly automate the whole thing and amp it all with only 2-3 boxes, but it'll cost you a pretty penny to do so.

I do like the horny stuff, and I have heard a couple of superb systems home-built using drivers recovered from cinemas.

I also have nothing against a bit of quality woodwork, especially when it comes to speaker cabinets. But some of the typical-magazine-pic horns look to me like they are built as bling to sell at bling prices. But hey, porn, yes... so bring it on! :D

OK, so here's a nice bit of woodwork. And I have heard a pair of these and they sound every bit as good as they look. Tannoy Turnberry:

I remember a series in The Absolute Sound magazine (back when it was digest size) on drivers recovered from cinemas. Coaxial (and maybe full-range) speakers with write ups on the history and sound. They also listed the going prices. Many were very expensive. A bit prior to the article they were dumpster fodder. By the time of the article many were being sold largely to Japanese audiophiles.

I don't think the guys whose setups I heard bought the drivers for big money. I think they did the ground work instead, or bought them from people fairly low in the food chain. I guess it is one of those things where, if one gets in the community, then opportunities open up.

One of the guys was very much into vintage stuff: he had Quad tube power amps that must have been as old as I am. His audio creed was getting good sound of putting a small number of watts into an efficient speaker. I don't have a stand on that, except to say that, like somebody said about the Quad ESs a page back, the being-there quotient of his system was off the scale :D
I also got that from my friend's Tannoys: Listening to an Indian-classical live-concert CD, which I had had for years, I looked round to see who was coughing!

Haha, I thought permission was written all over her ........ picture ;-).

Sorry but not even close. One can spend literally millions of dollars on countless boxes and still not be able to obtain a PROPER integration of each individual driver into the loudspeaker/room/listener system.

As mentioned earlier, despite all the effort and literally thousands of measurements, adjustments, recalibrations and about a dozen of whole system reconfigurations my results with this one are still very far from perfection.

Here is my second system and a little challenge for those who want to guess brand and model of those speakers ;-).

Come on you guys, it's a very well known brand!

I will defer to your expertise on the matter... but I thought there were pretty sophisticated measuring suites available these days? DEQX in the home market, DBX in the pro market, simply the first two names that comes to mind... but aren't both of these capable of doing time/phase/etc alignment and FR correction, etc. Maybe not for crazy multichannel madness, but two channel bi/tri-amped for sure.

From the way the girl is placed.. the butt is the center channel? I suspect it is a wideband with a surprisingly extended upper range

That seems like a lot of trouble and might not guarantee smooth integration.

Perhaps I'll just stick to my bass reflex enclosure for now.

by end of week i should have some altec 291-16k's running in my system. my friend picked up a pair of those massive sized drivers for cheap locally in the thought of me...they are freakin massive size and excited see how they'll sound. i'll be pairing them with some EV HR9040 horns. one of best of don keele designs before getting signed over to jbl for their engineering department. when i do get them up and going, i'll take pics of course... but...the 291's are monsters. there is not enough words to describe how massive they are. have to see them in person to even comprehend how huge they are...altec dream system almost here. can't wait get out of hostiple to start playing with them.

I thought so myself, about 10 years ago. First couple of years was spent on trying. Then I decided ro hire professionals, whose livelihood was in voicing multi million dollar studio's all over the world. Team spent 12 hours at my place employing some secret measurement techniques and correction algorithms and finally left semi satisfied at 3am. Sound still sucked.

I figured if this was the best of what arguably best in the field could do, it's the dead end. The hardware is there, well almost. Problem is, figuring out how to properly measure the entire frequency range of a given loudspeaker/room/listener system and then correcting for errors without hurting everything else is almost impossible, no matter how expensive and sophisticated the hardware may be.

Good luck finding a single audio show where either DEQX or DBX or for that matter any DSP corrected setup got best sounding room awards. Those are the places where such systems suppose to have a clear advantage over conventional setups, considering time limitations and room constraints, don't you think?
