When I see audio sites getting all frothed-up about phrases like "PTSD", I can only assume they mean "Post Tequila-Shots-Disorder" ... Oct 4, 2018

@brencho you just feeling a little test(osterone)y today or have you heard this thing and can comment/rebut? JOLT is fun but Spring 1 plus Azure is an intriguing combo.

Yeah, the wheel on the previous one wasn't just prone to rattling, though, it was almost unusable, producing incredibly inconsistent input on many units. It was the standout "nope" that should never have shipped in that state. You'd have noticed if it still did that.

        Torq
Well, it all seems to work just fine. The wheel responds as I would expect it to, with tactile feedback on top of it. And the four touch sensitive bits have adjustable sensitivity and haptic feedback. So it works as expected in that regard.

Piddling around with imaging experiments ... stage on Clear vs. HD6XX is VASTLY wider on the Focal; more depth with HD6XX, but SO narrow.

That's always been the deal breaker for me with the HD6XX. Great in lots of ways, but I just wish they weren't so claustrophobic.

The open AKGs have depth and width. The FR can sound weird though. Get a K500/K501 and give it some juice. When that driver wakes up...

It’s the front/back foams on the HD6x0. Without them it widens considerably, of course then it sounds thin and the vocals more distant.

On my Utopia it’s due to the pads, they seem to funnel the image down, and overly reduce air. Changing them to something with a wider opening and there’s plenty of height, at the cost of it’s presentation becoming thinner and the tonality being thrown out or whack.

NOS mode only just using JRMC with red book rips. I have zero DSD content, so I got the PCM-only version.

You can still play DSD on the PCM version - it'll just automatically convert it on the fly (not that there's a good reason to do so). Are you doing any upsampling in JRMC or just letting it play natively? (Just curious, I liked it best native).

        Torq
Well, to be clear, I meant that sometimes the HD800S straight out of the DAVE feel like they'd benefit from an external amp (it's not about volume, they'll play defeaningly loud). Haven't had that with the HD820 (even on music that tends to show it).

Haven't tried normal HD800 out of this, since I don't own them.

Well, put it this way ... I can't think of a better all-round closed-back model than the HD820. So, in that regard, it's the least specialist and best performing of the closed backs I've had my ears on (currently own HD820, ZMF Eikon, TH900 Mk2, MDR-Z1R, TR-X00 Ebony).
