like Gaz said some of those miniLP and SHM CDs sound pretty cool, especially for classic and psychedelic rock. they have a funky EQ that is less obvious than Japanese vinyl but still there, it's flattering for some recordings. but I cannot fathom paying more than $20-30 at most for a CD.

I assume you’re talking about early 80s Japanese releases like the Black Triangles. Many of them do sound excellent. Several of the masterings were released in other countries without the BT branding and cost way less on the used market. Use Steve Hoffman Forums for research on this.

Bear in mind that there a good chance that whatever effect the cable has will sound more pronounced as the pads wear down. I've never liked the stock cable: too thin, seems fragile, can accidentally choke you. I use an HD-650 cable.

I agree with @yotacowboy - also if someone buys me a Fisher SA-100 in need of restoration I'll do another restoration log. Really any vintage tube power amp with readily available schematics is fine, but it'll be higher quality content if you also send a signal generator & oscilloscope. Otherwise I have to sell some things first.

Re: SBAF, I'm very grateful for what it is, and I try my best to improve it ever so slightly. And I know I'm not the only one. But I did tell my wife again recently, "At the risk sounding like those guys who say 'This would never have happened if Steve Jobs hadn't died' (and it wouldn't!) This would never have happened at Changstar." Everyone over forty thinks that about something sometime.

@Gazny testing will be today or tomorrow! but all the traces except for one are repaired, so it's just one jumper wire, but the new module is soldered in and the other 3 traces fixed.

gotta put the new caps and sockets in tho.

4 years after n+1 magazine's Mark Grief autopsied the dead specter of the hipster, in Lana del Rey’s satirical-autobiographical “Brooklyn Baby” there’s an easy mondegreen when she sings “my jazz collections rare”—she could just as easily be singing “my jazz collections real” —either way, this liberal postmodern obsession with “authenticity” and nostalgia-as-radical-chic cred fetishizes and amasses cultural capital, bc that’s all it can do: see and be seen as countercultural, taking revolutionary symbols of the not-so-distant past as fashion icons, as totems, as fetish objects, all the while caching sprezzatura as reified capital. It’s the same move when the hippies turned into the pioneers of Silicon Valley.
