One time YEARS ago when I was trying some way too expensive speakers in a store out (this'd have been nearly a decade ago) the shopkeeper who was a really old Chinese dude called me over and handed me Ultrasones to try.

All the while I was listening I had a vapid PR smile on my face and nodded along while he was prompting me "it's really good, isn't it? I like it a lot! It's great value!" with his eyes lit up like a beacon and a really enthusiastic grin on his face. There was nothing to gain from shitting on his gear so I went through the whole song twice then thanked him profusely, then left.

That’s very important. Equipment should sound as if it gets out of the way between the music and one’s being. It bears similarities to the rule that if people *notice* you’re well-dressed, you probably aren’t.

Isn't the aim to have equipement that one does not notice?

Another example is type. If one notices typography, it's bad.
