    Lepin Y-Wing Set

I was hoping with Rogue One film and the "re-appearance" of the legacy spaceships, Lego would re-release the UCS (big sets) X-Wing, Y-Wing, or Princess Leia Blockade Runner. This hasn't happened yet. I don't like any of the new spaceships in the new movies. I almost bought Krennic's shuttle, but in the end decided against it. It was too derivative of the all-white Imperial shuttle - like an all black lamer version. The new X-wings have retarded paint jobs and are tweaked so they don't look as awesome as the old ones. Besides they are not UCS. The new U-wing is just ugly. I can't see any of the original Star Wars spaceship designers coming up with these crappy looking designs. There is the new UCS TIE Fighter. Now that's a possibility, although I'd much rather prefer Vader's Advanced TIE.

So with some reluctance, I purchased a Lepin Y-Wing set.

By the way, the Lepin set was missing one of these parts. No surprise here.

I had to substitute two of these parts. Can you see these two parts at the left of the fuselage where the two black bins stick into the blocks?

    DAY 2

So this was a little bit of a curveball.

The authentic Lego pieces look like the picture below, but the Lepin pieces are two pieces that need to be snapped together. This took me a long time to figure out! These are the kinds of things that make the Lepin sets annoying and why I would rather give Lego twice the money for an authentic set.

I had to use this wrench of punch the two pieces together.

Here's the front of the Y-wing and the cockpit.

Typical Lepin, they provided the wrong piece (the one of the left). I had to go in my stash and get the correct piece (the one in the middle bottom)

These pieces form the target computer - remember, from the Death Star trench run where all the Y-wing guys bite the dust. Except for one who made it back along with Luke and Wedge. I bet that particular Y-Wing pilot probably faked technical difficulties so he wouldn't die. I don't blame him.

BTW, this part is supposed to be built at the end. I skipped a few sections to build this so I could attach it to fuselage. My son said the fuselage looked liked a boat, but I wanted to show him that it supposed to be a spaceship. Of course when I put the parts together (temporarily), it still looked like a boat. Heh, I guess the Y-Wing is supposed to be a space boat.

Here's the fuselage with the wings attached and greebles added. I'm saving the R2 unit for last, so it's not in there yet.

I'm not sure about the look of the copper plumbing, as I don't remember it in the Star Wars movie. But my guess is that the Lego model is based on something like the picture below. Maybe it's a matter of lighting.

The Star Wars people say the Y-wing looks like this because the original plating was usually taken off by the mechanics to make maintenance easier and lighten the craft. I believe the Star Wars cartoons on TV might have shown the Y-wings with their plating intact. It's all BS anyway. The reason the Y-Wing looks like this is because the artists in the 70s were awesome and loved to put in little details to make the models realistic looking on the big screen.

BTW, lots of these pieces missing. At this point, I don't think I can recommend this set, unless you happen to have a comprehensive stash of extra Lego parts.

Good to know @Marvey. It's a good looking set though. Lot's of detail.

One of the nicer things about this set is that we can build two mirrored parts at once, making the process less painstaking.

Nacelles and rest of the engine.

The axle and connector pieces that take up the length of the engine don't have a good friction fit. This is typical of Lepin and similar to the landing gear situation of the Lepin Millennium Falcon kit where I had to superglue the pieces together. This situation isn't as bad because we have four connectors. Even though the friction fit is weak, four of them do help to keep everything from falling off. In time, I will order authentic Lego parts for a more sturdy model.

Also, the tubing pieces are the wrong color. They should be white. Not a big deal since I can spray paint them white. The authentic Lego set has precision cut pieces of tubing. The manual specifics x4 or x5 tubes per section. The horrible thing is that the Lepin tubing pieces vary by up to 2 or 3 millimeters, so it was a pain in the ass to pick out the pieces that happened to fit together. In the end, I trimmed a few pieces to get everything to fit better.

One thing I noticed about this interpretation is that the fuselage and engines are stretched out - more like Star Trek! The models form the films look more "stocky". I actually prefer this longer sleeker look from Lego. For comparison, here is a frame of the Y-wings in action during the Death Star trench run.

To end, let's pay tribute to all the Rebel pilots that bit the dust.

Is it me or is there like at least 2 different helix angles (and like 4 colours) in the Lepin tubing?

I didn't know the Y-Wing had an R2 unit slot until now.
