I am going to continue to love my 6 screw and be happy. I have burned through a totally stupid amount of cash over the past few years chasing that last little bit of performance improvement.

Pretty much. I'm in the same boat, now that I have a better grasp on the difference between the two. I do see them pop up from time to time though. Best of luck. I'm sure I'll be waiting for quite a while before I can locate one.

Given the level of performance, a 4 screws should probably sell second hand for 2k or more. That's what it's worth in the current headphones' landscape.

A friend just loaned me the Cary SLI-80 integrated amp. I want to try my HE 6 through the speaker taps. IIRC, I should be adding a resistor between the taps since the amp is a tube amp. Is this right and what resistor (in terms of ohms) should I be using?

IIRC it's only necessary with an OTL tube amp.

Thanks @frenchbat. The SLI-80 is a push-pull so it should not be a problem then.

Sure, I'm taking it to my local amp expert for such confirmation.

Don't listen to these guys trying to increase the value of their measly 4 screw HE-6s. I have in my possession an ultra rare 1 screw HE-6 that wipes the floor with all other versions. They're so good they don't even need pads. I might put it up as an IC, but I'll only listen to offers in the 5 figure range.

These last few pages have taught me that having a few screws loose, or missing, is a good thing.

What's going on with Audeze vegan pads, they're not listed on their website, B&H and Adorama are out of stock and each list one of the color as discontinued. I pre-order from both, hoping I get a pair soon to give the mod a try.

Audeze is sad that all of their sales are Vegan pads and not for their own headphones.

*They might be doing a silent revision but I think they are selling pads faster than their own headphones.

I recently received a pair of Dekoni TH900 Sheepskin pads, and I like them a lot with the HE-6. They're very nicely balanced, with good bass impact, no harsh or splashy treble, and the mids arent sucked out like some other pads. Look and feel great and are very comfortable. They have a slight angle and the opening is round and open and have good imaging/staging (Many pads cover a lot of surface area of the drivers causing reflections/splashiness). I like the more forward mids and presentation of the Alpha pads too for a lot of the music, but the dekoni are better with imaging/staging overall and sound a bit more even. A little torn between the two I suppose and will be swapping more.

likes/dislikes of the pads I've tried:

-Audeze Vegan pads (Comfortable, killed the sparkle up top)
-MrSpeakers Alpha pads (Forward mids, good bass impact, staging not as good as dekoni, cushioning a little more than needed-dekoni are perfect here)
-MrSpeakers E Stat Pads (Not as good impact as Alpha pads, sucked out mids)
-MrSpeakers Angled C pads (Better than Estat pads in most respects, but liked the mids/presentation on the Alpha pads more and staging on dekoni)
-Stock, Focus-A, HFM Pleather (Splashy treble, uncomfortable, itchy)

The ones left for me to try are the Audeze leather and the ZMF Ori/Eikon pads. I'm not sure I want to try the ZMF, but the Audeze leather I'll get to in a month or so.

Very nice! I liked the Dekoni DT Sheepskin pads on the HE-6. It sounds like the TH900 pads (which I ordered but received the DT Series version instead) are an even better pad with the slight angle and possible larger ear hole.

Checked it all out. The amp is working very well with the HE 6 from the speaker taps. No need for a resistor. Preliminary impressions are positive. Thanks for the heads up.

Had a 4 screw, loved it, bought another HE6 as a backup, it sounded awful, so I sold it, and before I sold it I pmed @ohhgourami with pictures of my two sets and turns out the veiled one with a lack of detail was a 6 screw.

The difference in tonality is ridiculous, for example. Wtih a 6 screw, I took of the grills, removed all the damping, removed the quarter felt, and also used leather pads with out damping. Nothing removed that veil.

For the 4 screw, even removing a bit of the damping at first made me think very carefully about system synergy!
