I'd say - a heavy class AB from the late eighties. Sony ES series are an affordable option.

Which I'm sure would be much more costly than these $200 speakers.

You do realize that Doc Brown gets discounts at Parts Express. He probably got that woofer for $78 at close out special.

I would think he would have made it himself. He is pretty smart.

How does Affordable Accuracy Monitor stack against the dirt-cheap Dayton B652 (60$) and the slightly more expensive Elac B6 (280$)?

I'm looking into an entry level speaker set-up, based on a Modi MB and a Schiit desktop amp that is currently in the mooting, and I'm interested in dirt-cheap but well performing transducers...

Excellent finding, thanks. The reviewer indeed preferred the Philharmonic AA out of the budget comparo, and didn't think much of the Elac B6. I guess at this point I'm more down for a pair of those as well...

By Schiit desktop amp, I hope you mean either Ragnarok or the yet to be released 2 channel power amp. Just clarifing that you'll need speaker outputs not line outs as the Phils, and others are passive. (It sounds like you know but just makng sure)

Oh, yes, definitely unreleased 2 channel stuff. Ragnarok is tantalising, but in and of itself its universality (IEMs, HPs, Speakers) is not a necessity. Combining a Jotunheim and a bigger Pivot Point variation would make more sense as far as I go...

It'll make no sense to release preamps without the matching amps. Seems stupid if they're simply going to pre the rags.

Per the Compendium, Schiit expects to have the preamp(s) ready for demo and sale/shipment by this weekend at RMAF. The amp, however, will likely be shown/demoed at RMAF, but may not be ready for sale/shipment by this weekend. See Release Schedule.

Back on topic, does anyone have experience with both iterations of the AA? Prior version was based on the Pioneer Andrew Jones bookshelves as opposed to the current Parts Express BR-1 kit.

Reviving this to see if anyone has had any direct experience with these and the Overnight Sensations. Dennis has a new Affordable Accuracy center channel speaker which makes it tempting to get a pair of the monitors and the center to make the front of a movie setup that could also do well with music. I think I read that the Overnight Sensations didn't do well at higher spls (no way for me to test for several more months).

This, according to the review posted up page and the not-shit rating from Marv.

Something to consider when thinking about these for near field:

For example, although the Phil AA's measure satisfactorily at one meter, the phase relationships between the drivers are optimized for a listening distance of about 3 meters. But it should still be an interesting comparison.

I was debating whether to ask in the general speaker advice thread or bump this one. I figured it could be better to post here since there's already a bunch of good info and impressions on the first page that people can easily reference.

    - Is this still a great value speaker for a 2.0 and eventually 2.1 setup in a small office? I don't know much about the current speaker landscape, like if any new ones had come out that can compete against these philharmonic AA monitors at this price. This is really the only place I come to for audio, and I haven't seen any new threads about good entry level speakers.

    - What would be a good (inexpensive) amp to pair with these? People in this thread have mentioned some pro power amps like Crest Audio CA2 and a Crown class A/B amp. Would something like this be good? It's on Amazon for $229 (USD) but the manual doesn't say if it's class A/B or D.

    - Should I also be looking out for good deals on brands like Behringer or Audio Source? Again, I don't know crap about power amps.

I'd recommend cheap. Class D with a lot of power or used class AB pro amps. Don't go overboard. They don't scale that much. "Affordable" is the key word. But I'm not going to stop you from putting 9" wide rubber or a big wing on your Honda Civic.
