I think it would be interesting to see how HD660S' drivers behave inside HD600's enclosure/mesh

Like holy shit... I am always amazed how Sennheiser's drivers are well-matched, from their lowly products to high end. For driver matching alone Sennheiser is the most trust-able, other than some HD6XX issues I heard.

I just wish companies like Audeze would follow this example.

Gotta hand that to Sennheiser. Even with pad variances, they are fricking perfect. Germans can be really annoying in their attention to detail, but this is a good thing.

Pads look like the ones on my HD 650 purchased in the last year or so. Silent refresh.

    Great job! Thanks.

Very interesting to see 660s had somewhat problematic patterns around 5k.
Also 600 was surprisingly clean. 650(k) seems well damped (I suspect 600 might be slightly over-damped to my taste) imo - very cohesive around mid/treble.

That's why some remove the inner pad from the 600. Personally I tried and preferred them with some of the foam removed, around 80%, but not all, because of the treble (which got a little too wild for my taste). Alternative was just getting thinner foam.

Edit- I wish i could measure to actually know the objective difference.

Those pesky Germans....with their perfect driver matching, Audi diesel-powered hybrid Le Mans cars, all-conquering Porsche 956s, Sinn mission timer watches specifically designed for air rescue teams, and Zeiss optics.

    God bless 'em! LOL!

Very cool compendium, thank you for compiling this; very interesting and informative. Dang, that HD600 still holds its own...

I believe that 5k ringing is definitely from HD700....

    https://www.head-fi.org/threads/sennheiser-hd700-review.614011/

Yep, definitely that 5k is indeed the characteristic of HD700 drivers.

Very interesting product actually. It is like forcing HD700 to behave like HD650, and I have to say Sennheiser rather did relatively good job for this.

Now the question is whether people would like HD650-sounding HD700.

Actually in the measurements less foam means less energy below 1khz. The foam over the driver does almost nothing in the measurements.
It essentially makes the baffle more "open" so you get more cancelation below 1kHz. It's best to think of it like a shelf filter for everything below 1kHz. I actually prefer some extra damping here to make it slightly warmer and less shouty/less aggressive in the upper mids, while also making it slightly warmer. A bit like HD650 midrange with less bass, but with HD600 treble in FR

Very interesting... If I understood the plots correctly the HD 660 S seems to have a decent amount more bass decay than HD 600 (and still more than a HD 650). Also there´s some ringing at 5k as already noted here. Treble seems very smooth with a controlled downward slope, no surprise there.

The next big question is how the distortion levels fair against 600/650. That being said, all in all for me I think this is looking quite promising actually (I´m one of the people definitely interested in a HD 650 sounding HD 700).

EDIT: Sorry my bad, somehow managed to miss the distortion plots on the previous page...

takee look at these, folks, HD800 has even cleaner CSD than the HD600 except the 6k fuggi. My bet's on the HD800S, HD800S will have the best CSD of all Senns. Measurements are only comparable if measured by the same person, same setup. @Marvey mind getting a pair HD800S to do the CSD? (Let alone the THD, everyone knows the S has more 2nd horm than the nonS)

So if the HD650 is really being discontinued, should I get another HD650 or HD6XX as a backup? How long do you think a single set will last given good treatment (but daily use)?
