    Hi all,

I'm actually a Lieutenant in the FDNY.

Many moons ago I worked in the "record department" at Nobody Beats The Wiz if anyone remembers them. Sold audio gear for a while there too. That's how I got my 2 channel gear.

Back to @msommers point, sticking to a job you hate (like Nobody Beats The Wiz) is really hellish. If you can swing it,go for it.

I only met that woman once, and she would probably be amazed to know that I thought she was a huge inspiration. I never forgot her words. Forty years and counting.

I didn't do it. And honestly, I don't think I had the mental capability. I'm good at knowing where to look stuff up, but not at remembering it in detail. That doesn't pass exams in medicine or law, which was another of my youthful wannabe things. It was good for Unix admin though! And actually, solutions to problems, however technical, were suprisingly-often straight from intuition rather than remembered knowledge

I am in awe, though, of what docs have to do to get to be docs: it's a damned hard road.

mechanical engineer; then moved into software for a phd; then a pastor; then a film editor; then a software developer; then a theology curriculum producer; then directing a community center for refugees... still a pastor, still coding.

Not at anything useful. And less and less so as time goes on. Care less too, so there's that.

Aspiring, still unsuccessful retiree :(. For the last 20+ years on payroll of a large, VERY LARGE, IT vendor as a system engineer. What I am really doing is design of the stuff that must resilient to all kind of failures and disasters. Mostly for large financial institutions. For some reasons my company clients still want to talk to me face to face. Otherwise my location would be Bangalore. Would not scare me that much, it looks like there is enough headphone crazy folks there to find a good company.
Not that I ever planned for this: my master thesis was in mathematical logic but..you have to make a living.

Isn't Toronto better than Bangalore any given day?
It might be a good thing that Bangalore is inflicted with horrible traffic jams. There are pretty headphone crazy, albiet some misguided, folks there.

Since you are in the same field, would you suggest a graduate software developer pursue higher studies?

That make sense, but most importantly stay on the top of the most current application development tools for cloud etc..Stay close to business, agile development is real.

Jack of all trades, master of none. I went to school for photography and they educated me very well for a world that didn't exist when I got out. Immediately went into electronics and soon was fortunate enough to work for a progressive company that taught me everything from optics and electronics to machining to sales and marketing. These days I work as a contractor for just a couple companies that do things I find of interest. Until recently I allocated a fair amount every year for technical books and self-study. Though my first love is audio and analog electronic design, most opportunities of late have been in the mechanical design arena. I can make almost anything in my garage shop, but it's unheated and winter is setting in. I'll move closer to the wood stove by spending more time in the electronics lab until spring. I still do a couple vintage rebuilds every year, mostly Sansui, but sometimes the odd tube amp or anything interesting. At 63 I think I've picked up a good bit of knowledge over the years, but attempts to monetize it have proved futile. I'd rather work on something interesting for free than something miserable for big bucks.

Resident physician here. I have more gray hairs than most of my attendings even though I'm at least a decade younger. Well, at least I look wiser and ain't balding yet.

Anyway, a lot of it people find to be a pain in the butt, but since I'm such a control freak, I don't mind it too much. I enjoy working with a team of healthcare workers and I love talking to my patients and educating them about their health. Even while juggling between a dozen patients, I try to make everyone feel as if they're my only patient.

If anything, my patients are my biggest teachers. They're the ones who teach you how to finally connect the dots and show you what real medicine is, as opposed to what we saw in books for the past decades of our education. A doctor once told once told me to stop thanking the patients, because we are the ones providing the service. I always beg to differ, since I feel so honored to be learning from them; all while being responsible for their care.

The process sometimes has been and is still sometimes painful; you're constantly getting bombarded with the latest studies and research, you live in constant fear of your superiors calling you out, you run on little sleep, and you come home having no energy to microwave a meal.

But damn, you get stronger everyday. Each day is a challenge, and right as you start feeling comfortable, a new curveball comes your way and you're humbled once again. In some ways, all of us are somewhat mentally deranged to get into this line of work. But again, these people thrive on this type of rush that normal people see as punishment.

Ultimately, I enjoy going to bed each night knowing tomorrow I wake up a better physician than I was yesterday. That's what really keeps me going.

If you never really wanted to go out to work in the first place, retiring takes no effort whatsoever. On the other hand, if you enjoy your job, and work continues to come... enjoy!

My last job was to chemically wash grease off of the ceilings of fast food restaurants after hours, often til 3AM.

But I'm currently finishing up my MFA in "Experimental Sound Practices", and I'm otherwise a freelancer in the fields of film scoring and sound design... Have a few credits as a re-recording mixer as well.

Had a low-budget short (a 'passion project' of sorts) show at Cannes a few months back, of which I handled all of the sonic roles -production, post, and music. It was very well received. That felt good. Always hoping this type of work will be sustainable.

Freelance medical writer (3rd career): for past ~17 years write medical communications for healthcare professional audiences (ironic, considering how many here are physicians).

Wrote satire on & off for decades. One client pays me to "write funny" I've written (hopefully) funny/ironic T-shirt slogans for them >14 yrs.

Referenced medical communications + t-shirt slogans (yeah, it all makes sense).
