That's interesting, to me it looks curved in towards the center of the driver, and the way they describe the reflections seems to support that. They describe it as concave and I assumed they meant from the outside perspective.

To me the glass part looks flat on the outside.

I wonder how much a Colorwear HD820 will set someone back, $3K?

I know that it's early, but as much as I appreciate Sennheiser, this just doesn't have much interest for me. I really don't NEED a closed flagship. I picked up my hd800 for a ridiculously low price, used. I would venture to say that it will likely still sound better than the 820 with the later being better for isolation. I'll be watching this one from the sidelines.

Ah, I'd assumed it was concave going outwards. For it to be depressed inwards would definitely help diffuse reflections.

I'm going to be looking forward very much to impressions on these. Guess the soundstage will be diminished somewhat (not necessarily a bad thing for some) and perhaps better tonality? Gah, I'm definitely running off to demo this asap.

To me, concave would mean concave as you see it from the outside - not from the inside, which you can't access.

This can be seen in Sennheiser's 820 video:

The Sennheiser guy has been honing his spooky skills, so skip to 55s if you don't want to watch through it.

I would assume "concave" to mean concave relative to the sound waves bouncing off it from the inside...

A convave surface relative to the sound source will reflect sound to a central point. This can’t be a sound acoustical concept. A more logical approach would be to diffuse the wave to the periphery where they are absorbed.

OT, but whoever makes vidjas for Senn these days has a real hard-on for the less popular avant-garde film movements of yesteryear.

Okay, okay... Thank you Germany for making and destroying Sennheiser.

That all depends on the focal point (could be mid between glass and driver) and the curvature (xy) of the concave lens since waves are reflected at two absorbing positions, not the total circumaural perphery. I pretty much think Sennheiser know what they are doing.

I know they have the know-how to accomplish their aims, I'm just not sure about what they're aiming for.

    See: 660s.

The HD 820 is going to be a trendsetter! By the time it begins shipping, others will already be making headphones with cheap clear plastic windows on the earpiece.

I picture this guy at a party, alone in the corner practicing his routine while everybody else is trying to keep their distance.

I guess people just have to wait and listen/see.
Anyway, I think it is possible that this might be special. Had some time today and did some experiments, trying to replicate some kind of back absorbing chamber. This really looks like some Frankenheisser now ...

Some changes to pads are necessary. Piggybacking the pads with some HD650 pads ...

As I said above, it might be possible. Even more so, if one takes into account Senn engineering ingenuity. Don ´t underestimate them.

The gorilla glass should be fine to the scratches unless they fall on pavement. The paint might chip though over time.
