Dat thumbnail tho, did he go to school with the people who make the official Senn videos?

Also, once again impressed by how absurdly huge the 800 cups look when on people's heads. The strong fisheye makes it worse, I guess.

He's been a Senn shill. Like I said, I shared for the visuals...

Nice post. Thanks. Best to watch with volume off :)

Thank god these headphones have Hi Def drivers! I was worried they wouldn't support Hi Def audio.

Which one did you get, Marv? Your impressions on it would make us feel more assured in changing HD800 (SDR) pads.

In 2 years Sennheiser can make a 10 year anniversary edition of the HD800. I bet they will too.

I'm sure he got an accurate impression of the seal of the pads with his baseball cap on ... not.

He is not that bad but for audio I would not trust his recommendations. He does know a thing or two about quality, quality control and maintenance.

Except that as well said below and by @n3rdling , acoustics in a headphone earcup are a bit more complex than sun rays reflecting off a glass. What you say is valid above say 20kHz for sound waves but that’s not quite where most nasty reflections in closed back phone need to be dealt with.

I think that for all practical purposes, that glass shape and thickness were determined by its resonance frequencies, or lack thereof in the critical part of audio band... Making it concave rather than convex is a make believe for people to imagine all the back waves get neatly absorbed by the resonators at the periphery of the driver... Clever Sennheiser indeed ;-).

Is it flat to < 20 Hz like a closed back design?

I do not doubt that it is way more complex. That said, sound hitting a surface will have a significant part of its intensity reflected geometrically, in addition to more diffused reflections.

I am aware of lower frequencies being non directional, but anything above is (at least in regular spaces). I have no idea how a closed headphone space behaves, so are you saying that in such a small enclosure, geometry will only affect frequencies above 20khz ?

    Fully agree with this

looking at the pics and videos, I still see that the Glass in concave from the outside and convex from the driver side. I did not fully understand your response on that point.

Didn't the Sony Z1R have a funky shaped back as well? The Z1R controlled internal cup reflections well from my experience with it.

Different, perhaps, unlikely to be much less complex. Read dear old Feynman on the quantum electrodynamics of light and glass sometime ;)

He's the unbox guy into various electronics, not only audio related. He's more like a jack of all trades. But what he did with that vid, that's a nice work. For the first time I could actually see clearly what's been done to these glass pieces.

The HD800 came out in 2008. I bought mine used in 2009.

You sure about that? I seem to remember it was launched at CES 2009, which is about now basically. All the reviews dropped in beginning of 2009.

Launch date 2009-01-08 is what I found.

Have we had any sightings of the 820 being worn backwards yet?? Someone has to ask the tough questions here.

Then in one year it can be a 10th anniversary. I bought mine end of 2009 for $800 from someone at work.
