Haha yep, didn't intend to veil sarcasm at all. And we don't delete anything here, like I said, I'll sit back and enjoy the show.

Amen. This is one thing about HF that really irritates me. If someone pays more for lower quality, then sure they deserve some flak. But if it’s spending some more $$/€€/££/¥¥ and/or all the dozens of hours DIYing getting the exact sound you want, then more power to you.

^ agreed with the above by nacho. for full disclosure, i spent way more on my 2 channel system than i'd like to admit, let alone the ever increasing cost of records! in fact, @zerodeefex gives me shit about it all the time, and that's fine haha. and many of my associates have systems even more full-retard than mine. just clarifying that i don't care how much money people spend on gear, cause sometimes great gear ends up costing a lot, but delivers priceless and everlasting enjoyment as drfindley was describing earlier.

the thing of it is @Torq my dear associate, is that i just don't buy the "i'm doing this for you and the benefit of others" front that permeates your "dear diary" posts. maybe you're just doing this for you (or put another way, we write our posts for ourselves a lot of the time), because you/we enjoy it even though it takes time to write so prodigiously, and that's totally cool!! Otherwise it's like a Munchausen mom telling their child "I'm doing this all for you"

more people should use the forum to describe how wet their gear makes them, cause we all get perverse vicarious wetness aka joy out of reading about it!! there was no sarcasm, veiled or otherwise, used to construct this post. a lot of ball busting and fuckery happens on this forum, and some of my associates bust my balls constantly about my deep love of EAR shiny chrome surfaces, and that's fine... because in the words of Basil Fawlty, we're just trying to enjoy ourselves, dear...

This is probably a stupid question, but for headamps is it customary to add a preamp upstream of the monoblock amp? Or in this case, adding any preamp to this setup would just add a slight veil, short of using an Metrum Adagio. Coming from speaker setups, I’m used to speaker amps with no volume knobs.

The reason I bring this up is I would imagine one would use the preamp to generally adjust the volume to fit the music, and the volume knobs in the monoblocs essentially sets the amp gain.

No. Headphones do not need a preamp (unless you are using HE-6 that uses speaker amps) because headphones do not need that much power. Simple two or three stage circuits, all within one enclosure, are sufficient for headphones.

Woo wanted true pure full mono, starting just after the source - hence dual volume knobs. A better solution would have been to use steppers that remotely sync'd with each other.

@Torq is the only one in this thread who has heard this iteration of the amp right?
IMO this is just a dude who finds the bestest amp within his budget which suits his needs and sharing it with us.
Guys can we focus on Mk2.

It got me thinking, let's say if I have 2.5k disposable income and decide to spend it on a DAC, after demoing I decided to get a Gungnir Multibit which has 90%(probably not with analog 2) performance of a Yggdrasil and spend my spare 1k on hookers. Do I concidered cheap or getting a better value?

No, I did't mean "cheap". I meant "value". I don't think people equate "best value" with "best sound quality in your budget" because there is more to "value" than sound quality. "Value" includes things like features and bang for the buck. An amp that has 90% of the sound for half the price has more value for the buck but not better sound.

Edit: I did not see dllmsch's post before posting this.

Err...there was a request to elaborate. As stated in the first post. Did you get fucked over by a British girl/boyfriend or something and feel the need to be a patronising little prick?

My dad's family is from the UK so I'm all good on that front. As I said @GoodEnoughGear, defender of the Orfas, just trying to enjoy myself.

Neither. It means you have priorities other than audio.

Better is better. More expensive is not better.

I'd like to see a shootout / comparison of the W234mk2 against the Neurochome DG300 (using good OPTs) and Manley 300B NeoClassic. Two 300B headamps that I consider superb.

Isn’t there another 300B about to enter the market too? I can’t wait for more details...

The Apex Pinnacle2 is somewhere in the range of the Woo monoblocs. That seems like a worthy comparison

Looks like I'm in the small minority that prefers 2A3 tubes. My experience with 300B tubes have been in my BeePre preamp and a WA5-LE V1 with cap upgrades. For tubes I had Elrog 300B the second generation that works in the WA5 and Sophia Princess and Royal carbon thingy. When compared against the Stratus on various tubes like RCA/Fivre mono,KR I find the 300B lacks the fine detail I could hear on the HD650/HD800. They do have better impact, larger soundstage, and I admit more fun on certain genres but don't drag me into the music like the 2A3 tube can. Now this might very well be a comparisons of the amps and this is maybe why everyone on forums are all over the place and how a particular tube sounds.
