So, my business partner just got back from a mini vacation, it's also his birthday today. We rent two offices in our building, and I'm in the original one, and he was in the new one, interviewing a new employee. Kid comes highly recommended from one of our other employees. Anyway, my partner has ADD, bipolar, and the attention span of a worm. He's all over the map. He goes into one of the private rooms, but leaves his wallet and cigarettes on the receptionist's desk. (we don't have one, so empty desk) We hire this kid, he comes strolling into our office, and he's looking for his wallet. Needless to say, it's missing. Going back to him returning from vacation, he was in the Bahamas and won money playing blackjack. He had about $1200 in cash in his wallet.

Only thing we can do is call this kid, which we do. He swears he doesn't have the wallet and didn't take it. Forgot to mention, for some odd reason he brought his girl/wife to the office for his interview. We change directions, and tell him we have cameras (which we don't YET) and we saw his girl take the wallet. He says he'll ask her and search her bag. Voila. Wallet is in her purse.

Guy came back, apologized numerous times, and I'd say sincerely. He returned wallet and the money. Jesus, how embarrassing. I'd be so humiliated. I felt bad for the guy that recommended this kid too, he was obviously feeling uncomfortable with what transpired.

    Unbelievable world we live in.

Better he finds out his partner is a thief this way rather than after he ends up busted for something she did. Yikes. (Assuming he didn’t throw her under the bus.)

I’m hoping she is his former partner, not wishing any ill will, but I’d be heading for the door if I were in his shoes. @Wilson one of my favorite movies of all time. And I’ve seen a few in my life. :p

Holy shit, unreal. I'd consider a substance abuse issue, and I don't mean smoking a little weed, for one and by extension both of these people. How else to explain the desperation, stupidity, and high risk of failure to blatantly steal from someone from whom you, or your mate, is trying to procure f'ing employment! My god, it's like a scene from 'Drugstore Cowboy'.

Edit: forgot to thank you, thank you, for not spelling it 'Viola'.

We are on the 4th floor and were outside when they pulled up. She was rubbing her face, hard to tell, but looked like she was crying. He also texted my employee that recced him to apologize and said she was crying. f'ing dumb ass.

In one of my businesses, drugs are very common. I own a telemarketing business and I've been in this industry for about a decade now. It's always been an issue, however, when I moved to Florida (from NY) the issue seemed to increase exponentially. Not sure if it's the general area or most of Florida, but drug use is rampant down here, along with rehab centers, living homes, etc.

I live in a very nice area, and there are houses and mansions worth tens of millions of dollars within a few miles from me. Unfortunately, not mine. I am also surrounded by long term treatment facilities/communities. I work about 12 miles from my house, in a so so area, and again, same story. The employee pool is less than desirable here. Point being, my living area isn't much different than my work area, regardless of the income, affluence, etc.

I speak with other business owners in my area and my building, they have the same issues as we do. Florida is like the f'ing twilight zone.

Sounds like my analyisis wasn't anything you weren't aware of. I'm guessing your 'video' ruse was the only reason you guys ever saw that leather and cash again, and I'm almost as certain your interviewee is a good actor. But then, I occasionally tend towards the cynical.

At any rate, good story and glad it all worked out. Luck going forward.

Thanks. I am a bit more cynical/jaded than I have been in the past, but I still WANT to believe the best in people. I tend to think that overall there are more good, honest, etc people this world. It's just that I seem to find all the bad ones. Lol. Seriously though, I do believe that, but the bad just sticks out more, bothers me more.

I seem to recall from articles at the time that Florida was THE State for drug mills. Isn’t that why Rush L. moved to Florida? His house cleaner was able to buy cigar boxes of OxyContin. (Not a political statement).

@Warrior most people are honest, moral and mostly do the right thing, or we could not have a society. Even this guy did end up doing the right thing. He must know she has some kind of problem as he believed you that you saw her on “the tape”. Drugs re-wire people’s brains. I’ve seen family members and friends over the years do things they would never do if they weren’t addicted.

Teens get a lot of bad press for being dishonest, immoral, liars, and cheaters. I find that adults fit that description much more than teens. Are they perfect? Who is. But most teens seem to have a conscience. Actually prefer working with teens than adults. Teenagers admit guilt, more often than you might think, even when they could be quite and get away with it. I have been a supervisor a couple of times. Adults will deny things even if you saw them do it with your own eyes.

So don’t lose faith in humanity just yet. These kids coming up are better people than many folks think.

Edit; I’ve been working at some job or another for 46 years just to give some perspective.

Excellent points!! It's true that the negative shit gets the most publicity. I just wish the news would show more of the better, happier, and good news. I suppose it just doesn't get the ratings.

Florida was known as the pill mill state and I think they are still trying to recover from that disaster. Plus, a lot of drug addicts come down here to rehab, something to do with the weather and beaches.

Couldn't agree more about the drugs rewiring brains. My best friend, he got caught up in it. Started with pills, graduated to heroin. Lost his house, getting divorced, and barely sees his kids. Like I said, I'm in Florida, but he's still in NY. He completely lost his mind. Abusive towards his wife (verbally), doesn't trust her, accuses her of having affairs (with me included), of making porn on the internet, and some crazy shit.

The crazy shit his told me, especially about the porn. Omg f'ing out there. He claims some random girl in the net is his wife. That the video companies are blurring her face out, hiding her tattoos, putting different faces on her body, hiding secret videos in children's apps on the phones. He thought his phone was tapped, along with his computer.

He's been talking to me on and off for the last 2 years. I know when he's back on drugs because he goes through all of this insanity, plus he barely talks to me and when he does it's to throw accusations at me.

It's really sad, besides the obvious part of him destroying his family. I was best friend at his wedding, chose me over his brother. Godfather to his son. I call his mom and dad, just that, mom and dad. He was the best friend ever. When I had my car repoed, he gave me his Cadillac CTS-V, so I'd have a car to drive. He made the payments on it too. I had his car for about a year. Now, our friendship is in shambles. Kills me. f'ing drugs. Oh, and even when he had clean time, our friendship wasn't the same. He was clean for months at a time but he still believed I slept with his wife, and I forgot to mention, that I was her pimp. Not even joking. Crazy shit.

Last thing, this affair we were having, and me being her pimp, happened while I lived in Florida with my Fiancé, and they were in NY. He actually believes that crazy shit.

@Warrior years ago I had a friend who ruined his life with cocaine. Lost his business, his wife and his friends. Luckily I didn’t go through all the crap your friend put you though. A mutual friend said they saw him about 10 years ago, living on the streets, hardly recognizable and wasn’t really the same person. The 90’s were a sad time in some ways. So many people thought that all drugs were harmless. They sure got that wrong.

Good luck with your business. Hope you can find reliable employees.

Sorry to hear about your friend. It's definitely a bad situation to be in. Thanks for the kind words, much appreciated.

It really sucks losing my best friend. I'm 42 years old, and I don't go making many friends at this point of my life unfortunately.

This. Out of several from High School, decades ago, some never changed and several are dead. However, I do know a preacher and a Police Officer now, who I knew back then. These two were the worst and not only turned their lives around but did so in a manner that helps others. You just never know and be there if they ever do truly change.

Agree. Most of my new friends are work-related. They are just different than the kinda friends you make earlier in college or high school.

I lost a dear Japanese friend quite a while ago. Couldnt believe he was gone. Passed away when he was in Japan. Doctor didnt know what happened, said his heart just stopped. No drugs, no nothing. Lived a much healthier life than me. U never know...

No, you never do know. Sucks when you start losing friends. I've lost a couple this year. One a heart attack, another did tooamy drugs and drinking, fell, and went brain dead when he hit his head. Friends of 20 years too.

Craziest thing. Out of the blue, my friend called me the other night. I think a day or two after the post about him. He says he's doing fine, and he sounded fine, but I suspect he relapses when we weren't talking. It's so weird, he just talks to me like nothing ever happened.

So, figured I'd update this thread. Wednesday, some dude overdosed in the parking lot. 3 of my employees saw, called 911. Kid gets arrested. The genius that was involved with the wallet situation goes to this kids car, tried to open the door, it was locked. The back window was broken so he put his hand in to unlock the door, the alarm goes off. He walks away, fast, but there are cameras. Of course my landlord sees him on camera, grabs him, and brings him to my office. OMG...so embarrassing. What a f'ing idiot. Sucks, because he's actually a decent salesperson.

    There is a society.

And then there is a society.

If you can man the bridge between them, if you can fill the gap. Then you have my sympathy and respect.

Kind of sheds new light on how the girlfriend was the alleged wallet thief.
