The metallic ring is, most likely, caused by the post-ringing caused by the output stage, especially if using thin & longer headphones cables. Everything should be measurable, we just need to find the right approach. I will do some tests with several cans and see if I find one having pre or post ringing on FUN.

Also, if THD increases a lot after 10 KHz, then the bright sound appears on the headphones; this is caused by the added harmonics and subharmonics. If THD is flat across the entire spectrum, then a more neutral and balanced sound could be obtained.

Back to the subject, there's no noise I can get with my sensitive cans, unless I max out the volume (which is crazy). I was unable to find over-bright or metallic ringing on the headphones tested on this amp. I'll try some more cans and get back if news will appear.

I actually started this thread by reading backwards. I read the last reply first and then moved up to the beginning. I was confused, bewildered, and astounded by the way some of you guys choose to spend your time. Bananas? WTF?

Then I read the OP. :(

I am a scientist at heart, so if you find an objective measure, then I encourage that path. The problem is I have bought a lot of amps and CD players that objectively measure well, and annoyed me endlessly when listening to that gear. So i have become a greater believer in 'what do you hear' vs 'what do you measure'. The difference might just be down in the .0001 percent but if our brains are hearing an annoying pattern, then that is true too.

Exactly the same thing applies to reading reviews. And what my last post really said was not to fall into the trap of using those same old hackneyed annoying patterns. They are not message: they get in the way of message.
I started with the bananas bit. It was probably that that primed me for thinking the whole thread was a spoof
