I think SK is really a genius. Often not getting the respect he deserves as a truly brilliant author among literary circles bc he is a best selling genre writer.

The Dark Tower series is truly monumental and unbelievable story.

Im re-reading 'It" for the third time. It is terrifying. Few writers of fiction can touch SK.

Also just finished this. Definitely recommend. The book has like 4 or 5 false endings which was a little annoying, but somehow satisfying.

    Now reading:

Napoleon: A Life by Adam Zamoyski

Its a relatively new and somewhat revisionist biography of Napoleon. I think its fascinating. This is the third bio of Napoleon I've read. I think he is one of the most fascinating figures in history and one of the most misunderstood. Highly recommend this one. Good narrative format that is pretty easy to read.

Not the hugest Bowie fan, but this is a great book. The author’s Iggy Pop bio is even better.

If you're a history buff, you may enjoy this:

Fascinating chronicling of the actual events surrounding the change in military momentum during America's war for independence. Corrects some misconceptions perpetuated by "historians" and textbooks by careful analysis of source documents (correspondence on both sides). Not dry, doesn't get bogged down by minutiae.

(btw, was referred to this by one of the negative reviews of that Meltzer book I posted earlier)

Thank you to the folks here who recommended Neil Gaiman when I mentioned I really enjoy short fiction. Just finished Trigger Warning last night and it was great. His writing is certainly very diverse, mixing horror, sci-fi, fantasy, past, present and future, with some poetry thrown in for good measure. Every story really was something different.

Look forward to reading some more of his works soon.

Back from long break from books.
It's a habit like any other good one that goes when not nurtured.

    Summer-to-spring reading:

    The Tao of Physics
I picked it up years ago and quit. Not a fun easy read.
Now picked it up again and finished it. Worth it.
Lovely play on dualism/symmetry/opposites in every
    sense of thought.

    Think and Grow Rich

    Good one to get yourself aligned with the streams;
a must read for young adults lost in the mix.
This book has impacted me a whole lot. It's quite a bit deeper
    than the cheesy headline suggests.
    Liberates one from ''should-as'' and ''could-as'' .

    The One Thing
    A Cure for procrastination.

How to Win Friends and Influence People
Read it, finally after several mentions here in SBAF and some other places.
    A guide to basic diplomacy.
While worth the read I couldn't help to be slightly disappointed, expectations were high.
Probably a must read for many. Ironically, those who would need it the most won't touch it.

Just finished the Night's Dawn Trilogy by Peter F. Hamilton which was enjoyable despite some of the characters being pretty one dimensional. Started Revelation Space by Alastair Reynolds last night.

The Plague - Albert Camus. I've read this one before but now it is hitting home. Thought I'd post some passages.

"Everybody knows that pestilences have a way of recurring in the world; yet somehow we find it hard to believe in ones that crash down on our heads from a blue sky. There have been as many plagues as wars in history; yet always plagues and wars take people equally by surprise."

The discussion in the Coronavirus thread about how death is not a topic people think or talk about as much now as in the past reminded me to post this here.

It is by a long time palliative care doctor, I read it after my father passed away recently. It is sometimes funny, sometimes profoundly sad, often uncomfortable, but it does make you think about things that, lets face it, most people try not to think about but that are none the less real.

Just picked up this book for my Kobo. For anyone interested, she was recently interviewed by Dr. Brian Goldman on his show: https://www.cbc.ca/radio/whitecoat/...the-movies-doctor-demystifies-dying-1.5496491

I have read most of the Carey Sublette website, but this goes way deeper into the people who made the important discoveries and gives a much better picture of how the discoveries relate chronologically and build on each other toward the Manhattan Project. The effect of the 2 World Wars is also really dissected; how they influenced the science being pursued and how they caused so many scientists to ultimately land in the US

Nice! I just finished the first book in the series and really loving it! What other fantasy do you read?
