TBH I wasn't very impressed with the WM1Z back when I had it. I bought one for a review of the Sony XJE-MH2 and ended up selling it as soon as I finished writing, mostly because I realized that even when I'm using a pair of CIEMs tuned by Sony, I still preferred the SP1000. Too dark and colored in general and a bit weak without engaging the balanced mode.

Later in the year Sony made a 4th XJE-MH2 model that is "specifically optimized for the WM1Z". I tried a demo pair and did prefer those on the WM1Z, but they sounded cold and distant on just about every other DAP.

 

Totally agree that SE it's not that special. However, in balanced it's another thing entirely. Pain in the butt to get a 4.4mm plug? Totally, but worth it IMHO. Cheers

Yeah, bought my LAu new from Cavalli for less than that (but then again I was one of a select group that got to buy the final run for a special deal). Still, a great amp!
