Ironman (not Disney, but Paramount, and folks forget this) has a spot in my heart. It was fresh, it was risky. And it was good seeing the ever talented Martin Downey Jr. get back on his feet. Glad he didn't end up like Jan Michael Vincent.

Iron Man 2 and 3 sucked unfortunately, as did Thor 2 and 3. Others were pretty forgettable.

Speaking of Bollywood: one of my all time fave junk food films is 3 idiots, which I've seen more times than I care to admit. Anyone else seen that awesome pile of WTF or nah?

To me I can hear a 1000 virgins screaming at Rouge One. I know too many fat virgins who live with their mothers get uber pissed even today on how Disney is handling Star Wars.

I stop caring about Star Wars after the prequels.

Those effects look horrible. Did the vfx artists use my Lego for reference material?

I used to like Excalibur as a kid, but now I just feel like it should have been a stage play with all the operatic, bravura acting.

Last night watched Marriage Story. A love story told through a divorce, it pulled really strong performances from Scarlett and Adam. Ray Liotta as a sleazy divorce lawyer is a particular highlight.

Good thing he only retconned 91.2%! (I haven’t actually seen ROH yet. Even the guys on the Flophouse podcast didn’t like it!)

I watched The Irishman. It is incredible how Scorsese can make a movie this long flow effortlessly from scene to scene. Performances were great across the board. The de-aging CGI, unfortunately, looked fake to the point of being a distraction. Crashed and burned at the bottom of the uncanny valley. It is especially hard to do this with actors whose younger faces are as familiar to me as De Niro, Pacino, Pesci.

I haven’t read much about what Scorsese thinks about how it turned out. Anyone know whether he said he was satisfied with it?

Too bad he didn’t/couldn’t take The Godfather 2 approach and cast different actors for the earliest scenes.

Younger family members found the disconnect of young faces on obviously old-man bodies trying to do young-man stuff just funny. The the scene where a younger Frank kicks the crap out of the shopkeep who manhandled his daughter, for example.

I'm waiting for the inevitable screaming the first time a woman is prominently de-aged. Don't know that I've seen that yet although I probably have.

The Carrie Fisher and Sean Young cgi monstrosities were bad enough. Ugh.

Let's not forget John Frankenheimer. He made some stone classics (THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE; SECONDS) and was still going strong late in life (RONIN).

I just watched Ran for the first time yesterday, and it is like Kurosawa never lost his edge in old age. Also, taking King Lear and make it a Japanese epic was an amazing idea.

If it wasn't for his films in the 50s making foreigners big fans of his films, we would never gotten Ran.

I'm still giving the Seven Samurai as my favorite Kurosawa film ATM, but Ran is a few steps behind it. The Color....

Rewatched the middle of BABY DRIVER last night. Yes, the film is overly self-adoring and too full of music video moments. But there are wonderful getting-to-know-you scenes between the main character and the waitress (Ansel Elgort & Lily James)...a few moments where young love & a great soundtrack really do take us higher. Those charming scenes brought to mind Altman's THIEVES LIKE US with Shelley Duval & Keith Carradine shining amidst grim surroundings.

Kudos to Jamie Foxx for being so badass & scary that I tried not to look directly at him; and to Lily James for turning out to be yet another highly trained British accent with no accent whatsoever (I'm surprised to find she's not from here).

Yeah but it would have lost the 80s swords and sorcery vibe that rules and the “we dropped acid and are going to explain From Ritual to Romance to 15 year old boys” script. You can’t have armored knight on naked woman sex and brutal medieval violence on stage.

I love Edgar Wright, but the first third of that film is tough: maybe a little too cuties and self aware, then it gets really good.

For all its shortcomings, Excalibur remains the best King Arthur movie yet and adheres most closely (well as much as it could) to the tombs of Mallory's Le Morte d'Arthur (ancient) and White's Once and Future King (modern). The fight scene between Arthur and Lancelot was brutal with them sticking their blades into the spots where their plate armor would not protect them. If that wasn't already kind of messed up, Boorman had his daughter play a naked Igraine, Arthur's mom to be, being raped by Uther Pendragon. As for the stage play stuff, that's just the Jean Luc Picard method of acting. Patrick Stewart is actually in it as Leon de grance.

1917 is basically Roger Deakins being a showoff. Some of the camera and lighting work was just absurd, almost distracting.

Other aspects of the film were also great. Strong performances by both leads, stellar work by Thomas Newman on the film score, and the set design was beautiful.
