I can only go to 0.75 Vrms SE and 1.5 Vrms balanced on the Focusrite 2i2. This is the Gen 1 2i2 and probably their latest USB driver has this limitation (or bug). Later generation 2i2s may not have this problem.

I believe the 2i2 is currently on it's 3rd generation with much better specs and the ability to power from mains. The Gen 1 can only power from USB.

@purr1n the Focusrite Scarletts are known for dodgy caps and other parts that lead to function by function failures on the interfaces. The Claretts and above use better stuff.

All the Scarlets and all of the bus powered interfaces including the ones with much better parts like the Apogee Duets (ugh those were really bad) and MOTU M2/M4 (xmos usb instead of the fgpa) are gimped for power and cleanliness.

@ultrabike, gen 3 scarlet specs are barely better, it’s still bus powered, and the usb drivers and chip is the same as gen 2. You have to get the 8 channel Scarlet to get mains power and it still has weak outputs. That one is only 100 cheaper than the 2 pre Claret, which sounds a better but the preamps still feel low headroom. Let me put it this way, the Scarlet is closer to Behringer interfaces than it is the Claret in sound. Only the super ridiculously overpriced for made in China codec chip gear Reds and Rednets lack digititus.

Do you guys want a Focusrite Clarett 2Pre(usb) to play with? I could potentially send you mine as I'm not really using it (although I'm in Canada... so probably not worth trying to send back across the border afterwards because customs is dumb that way)

That's very generous. You could donate it to our library. I think @ChaChaRealSmooth handles it. From there I could request it and pass it through the SR1 :)

I know we're off-topic here, but my Solo Gen3 has 2V RMS @2 o'clock and 4V RMS @5 o'clock on balanced TRS plugs, while max. output is at 5.5 o'clock (if I remember well around 4.35V RMS).

I wonder if you Gen1 2i2 is defective or some drivers bug.

It's no problem. Moved post to a new thread.

My best guess is that it's a driver bug. It is the same driver for Gen 1 and 2. More than likely it works fine with Gen 2, but Gen 1 broke on the ranges. I don't see Focusrite fixing this for a 3 generations old device. But who knows. It does not bother me.

S'cool, I'll send him a message. I feel like I've been more noise than signal lately, so this here would be some literal signal for those who can use it.
