We need to strike the right balance between precaution and collapse; but we seem to be incapable of making sensible choices. Some people don't have the slightest conception of economics; some people don't have the slightest understanding of disease.

The Fed is already predicting an unprecedented 30% unemployment rate and a 50% drop in gross domestic product. They're saying every tool is on the table including things like currency devaluation and debt jubilee. This will cause riots like we've never seen.

What is the value of human life. USA is the richest country in world even if a ton of wealth is getting concentrated to the top. We get people back into work we get them infected and people will die. That is not a theory, its a fact as long as we can't control the number of new case, as long as we don't have enough tests, as long as we don't have enough respirators.

Everyone wants things to go back to normal, who doesn't. But all signs are pointing to our healthcare system being pushed past the point where we can't handle all the cases we are going to have shortly. In NYC its looking like we getting there pretty soon.

Our stocks are going down, I know plenty of people who has lost thousands in their retirement investments because of our stocks tanking. But they are at least alive, they haven't caught it and nobody they know yet has died from coronavirus.

China has flattened their curve because of their strict lockdowns and quarantines. South Korea has flattened their curve because of extensive testing. Taiwan took tons of preventative measures like sending masks to their citizens and extensive screenings that stopped their healthcare system from being overwhelmed.

As much as we praise China, Taiwan, and South Korea all three countries are still reporting cases. Granted its all pretty low but as they start relaxing and letting people back into work, they are spreading covid 19 again.

If any country wants to follow their examples more power to them but this is a nasty virus. It lingers for weeks and we are only now in the USA starting to see that. Getting things back to normal is no way going to happen anytime soon. Trump can say whatever the hell he wants about wanting the USA workforce back in action in a few weeks but if shit isn't under control he will be risking thousands of new infections.

Cooler heads will prevail hopefully. Trump seems to actually be deferring to specialists like Fauci as much as he likes to "go with his gut". We are likely headed towards a depression as it will take time to get things under control. We have 80m people under stay at home orders from their state governments and of course that is going to hurt economic growth. And guess what, the rest of the world is likely headed to the same place with their own lockdowns and quarantines as this gets worse.

Stay home, stay away from people, try not to go outside unless you need to friends.

Thinking there's just a dropped comma in the unedited post.

This whole situation is fucked and a great deal of that is because people can't work the f**k together or agree or much, as evidenced here.

Not sure ethnic Chinese are "inherently socialist" putting the needs of the many before those of the few. Taiwanese are generally very civil, but there's also an "if I have no relationship with you, I could care less" attitude. Not to point the finger at Hong Kong, but I was just sent these twitter videos of someone wearing a "quarantine bracelet" out and about and not wearing a face mask. And there's a link to a Bloomberg article on how their bracelet tracking system isn't working properly.

Taiwan hasn't had any restrictions on businesses or going to work. The vast majority of recent cases have been "imported", mostly by students returning from Europe. Everything domestic has been operating as usual, though people are going out less and some restaurants have taken a hit. As I mentioned, my company is doing a 2-day WFH test run to prepare for the possibility of a lock down, while a former colleague said everyone at his tech company is starting partial work from home and they've rented out additional office space to spread people out more.

I feel really lucky to be here right now. In the beginning, my mother kept telling me to fly back to Canada (which would have been a total overreaction). Now, most major Canadian cities are in lock down. She lives on her own and is rather headstrong and stubborn, and went out for a walk early this morning, thinking there would be fewer people about. She said "soldiers" (I think it was police) asked her a bunch of questions and kept spraying her hands with alcohol. Hopefully this experience will convince her to stay at home.

Diss for the amount of speculation on other countries facts, as well as ours.

Maybe a small handful of people on SBAF have actual front line facts, and it’s neither you or I.

All the arm chair quarterbacks and YouTube scientists are only adding fuel to the panic fire. I’m not arguing that this isn’t a serious situation, and I’ve stayed out of this thread for the most part, but it’s starting to get ridiculous.

Hahaha, people here are not inherently socialist- a lot of the behaviour here has been driven by pure self interest, or mindless conformity (hm, so maybe socialist?)

Everyone went out panic buying masks thinking that it would protect them, to the extent that there were reports of shortages in areas that needed them. I think we're also the place that kicked off the global toilet paper madness

Singaporeans have probably been a lot more civic minded during this mess.

Singaporeans are only civil due to if they do anything wrong they get their butts whipped with a bamboo stick. Also, do even a little bit wrong and you get fined up the butt.

It's easy to control people when you scare them to death if they break a law.

Agree 100%. Hope you get through this ordeal relatively unscathed(as well as everyone else of course).

So i'm worried i might have caught it... my energy and endurance has rapidly gone down. 2 days ago i went for a run, had a slight bit of difficulty to get going, yesterday it was worse but eventually it was fine and went for a 15k run with the dog. But today i could barely finish an 8k run and the dog was looking at me like i was a pussy. Feel tired and stoned without the euphoria.

Who's gonna walk my dog now? f**k. Can't ask my parents since he's too strong and doesn't like other male dogs, not to mention they are at risk. My brother has underlying health condition so no go there either. Guess i'll have to keep a mayor deadzone and do it myself. Hope i don't get too sick.

I wish I had some answers. All I can do is stay healthy and not go broke for three months (at least).

Make sure you have enough medicine for when the pollen properly release. (Watch out for days of 15 degrees Celcius or more!) As long as the airways function we will be fine. May and June can turn out very warm...

In the meantime, the largest coronavirus outbreak here in Austria is developing into an outright criminal case. Seems like a few greedy hotel / bar owners and lazy / corrupt local politicians knowingly let the corona party continue for days, even after a bartender tested positive.

As a result, there are hundreds if not thousands infected now all over Europe, all tracing back to the same ski resort:

We're now on v3 of the auto-certification document you have to compile every time you leave the house.

At this rate we'll run out of paper before we run out of virus

Yeah i'm fully stocked on meds and also bought backup filters for my air cleaner. Perhaps the reduced air pollution will work in our favor.
We had a similar issue that caused a mayor spike in one of our provinces. A bunch of people were on wintersport vacation in Italy and then immediately went on to celebrate carnaval when they got back. This was a couple of weeks ago. Guess where the biggest % of deaths and sick people are...

My cousin caught it from her husband who decided not to cancel his skiing trip.

So I guess the solution is nuke ski resorts.

Nuke the stupid people and restore natural selection and survival of the fittest. Arrogance and stupidity are the main enemy here.

    I'm only slightly joking.

We have almost 8 million people living with HIV and another 500k odd per year infected with drug resistant Tuberculosis. The vast majority are living in impoverished townships.

We are acting pretty fast, but with a network of unregulated 'taxis' providing much of the transport on a cash basis...I can barely imagine how devastating this could get. :(

We have a lot of people who are not stupid, but are victims of circumstance. They will suffer at the hands of the arrogant, the ignorant and the entitled.

Where we can establish some control or have assurance over the number of new cases, we will have to reopen.

These are difficult public policy decisions:
    • How many do we allow to die per day while not overloading our heath care system.
    • How do we balance people's livelihood's to people's risk of death?
    • Ultimately, what is acceptable risk?
There are many people without jobs right now and they still need to pay rent.

Possible treatments, cures, and prevention will change the above variables, but the same questions remain. We've already come to accept the flu risk with mitigating controls.

We honestly need to get away from Trump this and Trump that. We absolutely need to think about where, when, and how we can reopen. Because it's not just Trump and Redneck Texans thinking about this, it's public servants who have been around way before Trump. It's us who have been couped up in our homes for only a few days. It's people without jobs who need to pay rent. It's companies from as small as Schiit to as large as Apple.

Wishing you well. Remember that all the other flu, colds, usual stuff is still around, so getting sick is not necessarily covid.

Actually, I was worried for a couple of days due to sore chest. But it's been sore on and off since I had the misfortune to inhale some truly nasty air pollution a while back. But it seems to be better today.
Hope that you too find your symptoms disappearing, or belonging to something relatively harmless.

    Best wishes!
