Oh god. And we might have to face it every year. If no vaccine comes, I doubt that I'll make it to 70!

Well, that one didn't last long.

Curious coincidence... someone has posited (don't know how seriously/authoritively) that the malarial regions might have some resistance. Wont help me, because I didn't grow up here (India).

Chicken soup! Why didn't we think of CHICKEN SOUP!

You sound like a London caff man! I certainly couldn't eat that much but I love those fry-ups. For lunch as well as breakfast :). And a good mug of tea too.

I can imagine. My dad is retired and he’s at the supermarket at 8:00am and he gets all the good stuff. I get my liversausage from a butcher at walking distance and he hasn’t had stock issues. Most people go to the supermarket for meat though which is in the same mall.

I'm just surprised no one's brought up powdered milk yet in this thread, since it can keep for absolute ages and is calorie-dense. Plastic jugs? Bags? Y'all weird ;)

Powdered milk is nasty, grew up in the 60's on mix of Carnation powdered and skim milk. (Parents are depression era babies, cheap to the table was the operative word). Like my milk still but won't touch anything under 3%.
Milk in a LDPE plastic jug is so much more than the contents: easy to cut to make a funnel for oil changes, a bailer for your skiff , bait/chum flinger when fishing the mangroves, fill the toilet tank from the pool or canal if the pumps go down and make ice blocks before the hurricane hits to make your fridge/freezer cold for several days beyond the power outage. Try doing all that with a poly bag or cardboard carton.

I'm a few pages behind in this thread, so I don't know if this has been mentioned. I know NPR tends to be leftward leaning, but if half of what Max Brooks said is true, I'd be really pissed right now if I lived in the US.

I spoke with my dad last night. My mom and he were in Taiwan during the early days of Coronavirus. He's been back in the States for a while. Definitely, he's left scratching his head at the lack of urgency on the part of the USA in the early days. And now, at the general lack of capability, in regards to testing, etc.

    I'm not pissed.

Governments are a reflection of the people, and the USA has never really suffered serious consequences of any calamities with the exception of the American Civil War. We didn't respond as well as we would have liked because the American mindset is that "this cannot happen to us". I myself am in this category.

Look how unprepared we were for 9-11 and the overreaction afterward. Also, I don't think Americans are as in-tune to what's going on in China. Taiwan gets much more news on China on a daily basis than the USA. A typical American might think that Taiwanese are paranoid about China, but Taiwan's had to deal with SARS and H1N1 scares each decade for the past two decades. There's an learning experience from these things which sticks in the mindset and hones emergency response. Heck, my mom listens to Taiwanese rumor mill stuff that the virus was a Chinese biological weapon, or that 20M Chinese cell phones have gone offline (presumably because these people have died from the virus). I don't think any reasonable American would even consider these sensationalisms, but reasonable Taiwanese could see these as possibilities. My kids heard my conversations with my mom last night, and smiled because they thought she was nutty. She is a little bit; but heck, now I'm thinking that at least of portion of what my mom believes could actually be true.

I don't totally buy this NPR narrative because hindsight is 20/20. Terry Gross mentioning Trump two times in leading questions before Max Brooks gets into it seems like poor reporting. I didn't exactly hear from the likes of NPR, CNN, Max Brooks, etc. that we in the USA we not doing enough in early February, when Taiwan was already on high alert. Even then, good public servants, or good employees, are going to get stuff prepared ahead of time, build in robustness to systems, regardless of the chief executive, or the one before that - this is something even Max Brooks clarifies in response to Terry Gross.

And as I said earlier, I wish my company (a French based multinational) approached the SARSv2 threat like Taiwan or South Korea. And I would say that how the different sites of the company reacted were indicative of the mindset of the countries they were located. :D Good thing is that we are OK now. Private companies are a lot more agile than governments because people's jobs on are the line.

P.S. I finally, finally got some good quality sleep today - this afternoon!

LOL. Powdered milk has a place, it's not in my cappuccino though.

If things go full zombie apocalypse I'll use it in my instant coffee. I hope it does not get that bad.

Also, milk freezes just fine. A 4 liter jug takes forever to thaw though......

The signs were all there, they had to be, I sold the rest of my stocks the first week of February and bought a camping stove and some other supplies.

But, I don't blame are gov't for taking a wait and see approach. They always do. And I don't really think I was expecting this, but I'm not sure what I expected either.

Love the people, hate the individuals. The love is theoretical. Feces on the Streets of San Francisco. Enough said.

The way the hippies and moonbeam crowd makes or prepares tofu, my parents and ancestors wouldn't eat it either. Too much like the white version (pun intended) of the protein bars in the Snowpiercer film.

I kinda thought you were overreacting until today. My daughter, being cooped up for way too long, asked me to get her Drumsticks ice cream. Yup, I was thinking DA f**k, DA f**k? WAT DA f**k DO PEOPLE NEED ICE CREAM FOR WHEN THEY THINK A WW Z SITUATION IS NEAR?

Some good advice there. Glad to know that the virus is a wimp and can be disinfected easily.

In my spare time, I did this for Californians. I like what @james444 said regarding deaths being a better measure (especially because of lack of test kits), with the caveat that there is a 15-30 day lag time from infection to death report. Will update every now and then, and later split into NorCal, SoCal, and Central Valley, when there are more data points. For those who live outside the USA or even outside of California, California is actually like three separate countries (or maybe 5 or 6)*.

    upload_2020-3-26_20-42-20.png

Considering that California has only shut down for a week, I would expect this to keep rising for at least another three to five weeks.

    * For example, NorCal people think SoCal people are dumb. SoCal people think NorCal people have something stuck up their ass.

I ordered some DIY wire from Trevor at Norne, to have a project to work on if/when I have to stay home. He said he was going to ship it on Monday, but I haven't heard anything back from him this week. Before ordering I checked that operations were still running normally and he said they were, other than shipments going out a bit less frequently. Not sure where he's located (his emails are tagged PDT, that could just be the Gmail server), but I hope he's OK.

To be clear, this isn't a "Why hasn't my order shipped?" rant. Just wondering if anyone has more direct contact with him and knows if he's OK.

You are full of shit. We don’t know yet if we build up effective antibodies to Covid-19 once we catch it. So far with other corona viruses, we do build up immunity to them. If scientists in China are to be believed, it appears that we probably do based on tests on another primate species. Read here:

That was a worthwhile 60 minutes. Thank you. The one bit that really doesn't square with my experience is duration. His high end of 14 days is the low end of nearly 20 different positive cases (all from NYC btw) with whom I've spoken and my partner is just turning a corner on day 20. And none of those cases required overnight hospitalization either. I don't know what to make of that discrepancy.

He replied to my Email two days ago. He had taken a couple of days off to decompress. He will get back to you. If you have not heard from him for a week, send him another email. Your order should not take long to fill unless he is out of something..

Recent statements from Fauci is that likelihood is that yes, people do develop an immunity to SARS-CoV-2 after recovering from infection. That's pleasant.

Here is the problem right now. The U.S. is risking more infections and victims because the virus was initially not taken seriously while about 30 million people are uninsured or receive little to no medical care because they are poor (or worse homeless).

The number of cases according to various news sources is surpassing China's numbers already.

Even in the best cast scenario (while research is still ongoing) the U.S. can say "we have positive findings" but the potential clusterfuck that awaits, oh damn.

P.S. I am not that positive about NL either. At least access to healthcare is better so urgent cases can be spotted earlier.

P.P.S. I am quite worried. Trying to not become a cynic these days.

You and me both, friend. I'm actually focusing more on meditation (hey it helps) and catching up on a backlog of used books (mostly fiction) I have lying around than keeping up with every new development outside; just randomly came across a pleasant piece of news with happy implications, breathed a sigh of relief.

Not sure how things are in NL, but I believe that despite the best efforts of idiots in office* people will get through this.
