Glass-ish sides are weird, but other than that, it just looks like back-loaded horn.

    Classic but worthy read.

Btw, when implemented well, such loudspeaker cabinets generally sound pretty good.

Ok, definitely fits the thread title in the "not much like real life" sense.

    Isn't this George Massenburg's place?

I think I was there once when they were still building. It kind of looks like a torture room in person with all those wood slats coming at you.

@spwath, Don't do this, ok? Especially not in your parents' living room.

I often see these types of labyrinth TL (horn?) speaker designs online, but I've never heard one in the wild. I recall a 4'' or so fostex driver that included the basic plans for a loaded horn box and had impressive FR with shocking (to me) rolloff around 35-40 Hz. Seemed almost impossible.

Has anyone heard a design like this?

Edit: found the design, I was way off. Bottom right, second page is box FR. Still impressive for a driver of this size.

One of local brands known as Cube Audio does their own widebanders inside of TL. Pricey speakers, but for someone into DIY they also sell their standalone drivers. During event in Munich their boxes went surprisingly low.

    Doesn't that look cool?

    https://dynamikks.de/Model_12.html

94 dB sensivity, around 10 Ohm impedance across the frequency band (where is that tube amp?)
10 inch mid/woofer with 1100 Hz crossover, 1 inch compression driver on 12 inch biradial horn
Disadvantage only available at the manufacturer's place.
Go visit the famous Odenwald in Germany, the place were mighty Siegfried (yes the one from the Nibelungen song) was slain.

Needs bigger woofer. 12" is too small.

Ulf Moning the guy behind Dynamikks cites Model 14 and 19 on his website, his Model 12 (12 inch woofer) was directly inspired by the model, seems he just put the buttons used to manipulate the microwave oven on the other side of the cabinet.
On his website under the header Technik, there is a section "Räumlichkeit" in which he says that one of the holy grail of hi-end spatialilty is mostly fake. He has attended lots of concerts and has never experienced a front/back localisation. Among the thousands of recordings he owns he has found some 20 odd ones which have a presentation with real spatial clues. All other got their spatiality during mixing/mastering.
He calls "Jazz at the Pawnshop" a recording where the micros were to far away from the stage thus picking up stuff which does not belong to the music.
His aim with his speaker developments is not that it sounds like live but that you get the feeling that it is like live on an emotional level, he therefore favours dynamics.
Under the section "Vom Hören" he says that he is not interested in technalities but he wants to render the music. in the sense that when listening to badly recorded good music you are able to still enjoy the music instead on concentrating on the fact that the recording is sub par. I do not know how far google translate will take you but I think it is well worth having a look. I agree with him I do not need to be able to pinpoint the violinist in a big orchestra who farted it is about the music as a whole.

I've been in that room once. Jaw dropping cool!

The engineer played me a 5.1 version of MJ's Thriller mixed by Mick Guzauski (Daf Punk's RAM mix engineer).
