Dude, only hardcore outdoors people spend that kind of $$$ on an actual off-road vehicle.

LOL good luck with the fake D44 BRO. Wait for the Toyotas to come drag your junk off the trail.

In all seriousness, I'm just clowning around. In a former life I had a back-halfed, SAS'd yota on 40's. Just giving you shit for a mall crawler. have fun and pack-it-in, pack-it-out.

Never tried to rep a 44, thats why I don’t have larger tires, and I agree it is a mall crawler, just light forestry trails. No desire to climb boulders, or do the rubicon trail.

The only real Toyota 4x4 was the Landcruiser or maybe the HiLux too.

I'm wondering who's had an opportunity to test out the EC Classic Phono Pre and what your thoughts are on it? Is it worth getting one, or does that depend on what it's being matched up with? If the EC website is up to date, it looks like you can place an order for one.

I have had one since March. With Schiit Sol and its stock cartridge, I am pleased with the sound coming from this system, but only from a few vinyls of old Jazz or orchestral recordings. Nothing worthy comments from new recordings like by Norah Jones or Adele. As this is the only phono and turntable I have had, I cannot speak to the merits of this phone in comparison with others. The unit just works, noise-free.

Mine is the default MM version. I would recommend that one spend more to get a customized version that would work with both MM and MC cartridges. It should save money in the long run as compared to getting the default version.

He says Moving magnet only - Moving coil through external step up.
The order form does have a special requests section. Is a dual MM/MC edition an option, is that something he just does for people he knows well and likes? I've never ordered any EC stuff before.

I had not asked about the MM/MC option. But like you said, external step up seems to be option that EC offers.

Just ask the man. Craig is a man of few words, but he did reply meaningfully to each of my inquires.

I did get a reply from him, which I hope he doesn't mind me sharing here:

The Classic is on hold. I am designing an LCR phono that will have transformers for MC cartridges. This is for an internet distributor, my deal is I can sell it through Eddie under a different name than theirs. This frees me from finding a new metal shop, and all the aggravation that goes with manufacturing. Don’t know when it will be done, or the price.

That's pretty awesome news. Excited to see Craig is still designing. LCR phono should sell well, no caps in audio circuit, inductors doing some heavy lifting. One word of caution, ive emailed him enough times and he has talked about enough products that were soon to come out, but never saw then light of day. I hope someone is taking a bunch of EC designs and continueing to produce them.

I had a EC "Phono Preamplier" which fell sometime after the Transcription and then Classic models. I "upgraded" to the EC phono from an EAR834P, which was considered a classic in its own right. Really just wanted to compare the two, keep the better one. Think I wrote about it in the preamp advice thread here. EC was better, and I would consider the Classic a pretty good value. Making up a SUT with off the shelf cinemags should be easy enough, and plenty of options to buy out there.
