Nice thread! I ride a Scott Spark (FS) with full Shimano XTR, DT Swiss 240 hubs, tufo heron 29".
Changed to carbon swing and an few other upgrades to keep weight low.

I use Nukeproof Sam Hill flat pedals.
On my racer I of course use clips, but I just really enjoy flats on the MTB...

Yeah, I recently converted to platforms as well on my Ibis. Nowadays, mainly ride around local college campuses and light trails. I was using ritchey road pedals for enduro racing. Some may find that crazy.

My girl since 2008. Everything but the frame and fork has been upgraded. Steel is real and 2.3 x 29 is cushy at lower pressures.

She came with BB5s. She is on her second set of BB7s. I should mention she is a Redline DT460 which is a Monocog frame made for 1x 9. I added the second chainring when I relocated from Florida (Sarasota) to Truckee (Lake Tahoe) but no front derailleur.
It is my experience that you know in advance when going uphill enough to warrant changing the front. I have the special retaining chainrings on there. I had the Porcelain Rocket bag made custom along with a soft back pack when I tried bikepacking a few years ago. It was not for me as I felt too vulnerable leaving my bike AT ALL. The frame bag is an excellent addition for utiliity. It holds enough tools to completely disassemble the bike and a lock, spare tube, extra Stans for tubeless, pump and 2 liters of water in soft Platypus bags.
To circle around to the topic. A full rigid steel frame is very easy to own and maintain. Mine has been a long time commuter as well as trail bike. My Jeep is waiting on a radiator and she has been pulling Urban Guerilla shopping runs into town. I do find the 29 inch wheels a bit cumbersome on switchbacked trails. If I was looking for a bike I would probably Craigslist a 90s steel 26 inch and trick it out or just get a Surly.

Bike Update. Got 2.35 Schwalbe Big Apples (Balloon tire slicks), Rotors and the new Stainless Steel BB7s. Bike is Faster and quieter. Leaning into turns causes tire to slip now versus the knobbies. I need a larger chainring now. 20200629_190847.jpg
