In the same family you also had the 6" HR624. Both of them far and away better than all the subsequent models that came after them. I suspect part of that may be due to the use of passive radiators, which none of the later speakers had.

Hmm there's actually a used set of the HR824 on sale local to me, along with the matching 10" sub. Kinda tempted just out of curiosity, though I don't really have a need for more speakers. If anyone is interested though, I could be a broker in between.

In this case, it's not the port. I taped over the port to see what happens. There is some minor effect, but most of dip just seems to be attributed to the woofer's characteristics (it's too far away to be the XO). The measurement below is with the microphone placed one foot away, aligned on the woofer level.

Per a few posts above regarding the listening position measurement, some of this is fixable, the dip can be narrowed, but not all of it.

Might be a fun experiment to try a different (stiffer or softer?) tape, since that's kinda like tuning or modifying the compliance or whatever the term is supposed to be, I'm not a wizard. Hmm or attach a small weight on top of the tape so it's like a tuned passive radiator.

No! I am not making a DIY passive radiator!

Damn. Who knows then. It's cheap Chinesium with no real lining stuffing to save on shipping weight.

For the JBLs at least, there was a thread on diyaudio where people were trying to clean the power supply with inductors... they were unsuccessful at fixing the hiss. It's probably the ADC they use internally.

Pros don't care, even about the hiss, as long as they can get a few years out of them. You can get a half dozen box of them JBLs for the price of a single Dynaudio BM12.

Curious as to why Amir didn't hear the horrible distortion on the cheap Class D amps when he couldn't hear the -95db distortion products from the Schiit Jotunheim using the HD650 when he cranked the volume knob to the 200-300 postion.
