Some flat black Krylon sprayed to the interior plexi, plus electrical tape over the Pi2AES LEDs, and nixing the Pi LEDs through the RopieeeXL menu.

Wifi should be fine as long as there are vent holes to allow the signal to pass through (it is in my case anyway). I’d think the physical connection needed between dac and pi is the limiting factor on hide-ability but the pi is an awesome music server and there should be a better option than to make it disappear.

That looks dope. Did you scuff or sand the surface before you painted to get it to adhere?

we could definitely make the cases out of opaque acrylic. We just don’t have a method of identifying the various openings that does not look crappy. Unlike the clear acrylic, etching into the colored acrylic does not show as a contrast.

But if we did make them out of colored/opaque acrylic it would have to be more money because I couldn’t get them cut in bulk. This of course, is assuming that the clear would still be the most common request.

I just wiped everything down with isopropyl alcohol. I was being lazy. But if the only thing you're doing with the acrylic is assembling it, and you're not futzing with it afterwards, it oughta be just fine. That's the whole point of painting the inside.

Maybe post the DXF files so folks with access to a laser cutter could use whatever color they want?

Done. Now comes the part where I’ve screwed up countless projects: not touching it before it dries.

Yes, but... My other Pi2AES used to be on the back of a SmatiPi touchscreen assembly running moOde as my work office standalone music server. It was a bit bulky and required a separate 5V SMPS for the screen. I finally reassembled it with your PiTouch case. It all runs off the Pi2AES/Mean Well power, it's more compact, all the wires go into the right places. I also tried it with Ropieee as a Roon endpoint at home, it's really nice to have the screen show the current album and offering a few controls so that I don't have to dig out my phone for those.

Hi Michael, thanks for posting these files. I'm planning on ordering a PI2AES soon, but I'm not crazy about the clear acrylic paired with the bright LEDs. I found this outfit called [Ponoko] that has fairly reasonable prices on custom laser cutting. I went ahead and uploaded the PI2AES DXF files to get an automated quote from them. For matte black acrylic, it works out to about ~$49, which I think is fairly reasonable for a one-off product. I just wanted to confirm, for Pi 4, the appropriate front and left panels are 'pi2aes-akm_case_p1_front' and 'pi2aes-akm_case_p1_left'? My assumption was that all files labeled 'p1' would be correct for Pi 4 (and 'pi3' obviously for Pi 3). Let me know if I'm mistaken. Also, the Ponoko service lets you choose between two acrylic thicknesses, 0.12 in and 0.22 in. Just by eyeballing the case on your website, it seems like 0.22in is closer to the stock case. Is that right? Thanks~

Here is a shot of the quote panel. If you wouldn't mind taking a quick peek to verify the dimensions, that would be great :)

Besides opaque and clear, acrylic is also available in tint/translucent colors, which I imagine should etch nicely. A smoked color would look awesome.

In terms of the raw material, clear acrylic sheets are very inexpensive and colored does cost more, but I didn't understand "couldn't get them cut in bulk". Cutting should be the same whether a sheet is clear or colored. Feed the laser cutter some mix of clear and colored sheets as needed.

Here's an explanation of acrylic color options:

By bulk, we mean ordering 100's from a vendor, not cutting them in house on our desktop laser! We could not justify the expense of doing it for colors until we saw a steady, volume demand. As for etching, our experience with trying it on translucent colors like red, green and blue, was disappointing. But, translucent doesn't really need etching since you can still see the PCB silkscreen.

Of course, your dimensions are in imperial, while we use metric!

But after much painstaking calculating (by my PC) the XY numbers are correct, but the thickness is not. They need to be 3mm (.118in) thick.

[EDIT] Also, adding up the numbers your cost will be $50! I would gladly cut you a colored case for that! Even less really. Maybe $35? Small sheets of colored acrylic are easy enough to come by.

I should have read your entire email before I replied earlier! Anyway, you are correct about which files are for the PI4.

Please post in the intro thread to help everyone get to know you and take a look at the rules.

I believe the general advice thread is where you want to post your question. The image upload didn't work and it's best to specify info in text so it's searchable (nothing wrong with also including images).

Is this offer available to all? I'd gladly pay $50 for a colored case, those lights do get annoying. :)
