I'll disqualify my opinion out of the gate, cause I'm not in the market for a headphone at this price level. That said, how many SBAFers are in this market? And more specifically have no recourse of their own to hear the thing? I know ORFAS has been a 2+channel thing, but damn, this smells ORfully close.

Maybe add an option to the poll for coke and hookers instead.

no worries! I didn’t mean to attack you just trying to get the point across.

I understand what you mean but because "more expensive seldom means better" sometimes it is interesting to try what a brand considers to be their TOTL product.

More often than not, you end even happier with what you already have or, on the other side, sad as hell because you can't afford it (but look other examples of how prices have decreased after a few years).

I think that it can just be interesting in the big scheme of things.

I'm working on several angles as well. Anyway, I initiated a request from my side and also mentioned you while at it. You can go ahead on your side too. Maybe we can get 2 or 1.5 units? Even if we only get an accommodation on pricing, that would be helpful. You know me, I dislike asking people for accommodations; however we're legit audio press in today's social media world, so we should ask.

I hear the rest of you guys on Abyss - wanting to get a Diana in a loaner for some time now. Wish we could make it happen; but I don't think the gear we own is good enough for them. As such I'm more than happy to pass them by while others like Audeze, RAAL, HEDD, etc. continue to innovate.

This is why the R and LCD-5 from Audeze intrigues me: trickle down.

LOL, don't worry about it. Just minor tweak to title. I did actually click on the thread because I thought there was an impression though!

With respect to LCD-4. I've said this before: It's up there with Utopia. I just never got around to trying to get my hands on it.

I confess I was only vaguely aware of its existence. It was a limited run thing right? SBAF does not have an impressions thread on this as near as I can tell.

Yea, these guys - Abyss is run/owned by a mercurial father and son team I believe - give off a negative vibe, like they are trying too hard to prop up their middling product. Still I would like to experience the Dianne. I thought about buying one cold but there was so little history of resell at Head-Fi I was not sure what I could get out of it...

I have just heard back from Audeze. We will be getting a Demo LCD-5 for a loaner tour in 1-2 months. Not as soon as you all would like I'm sure, but it's going to happen soon enough.

Perfectly understandable. I'm sure there is massive demand and they need to take care of their paying customers first.

We can wait. We've never had a need to be first.

    Changed my vote to Diana.

EDIT: changed my vote to "none" since no one here has good enough gear.

The Diana is like... the little brother to the Abyss 1266 TC. The Abyss 1266 TC is more inline as a direct competitor to the LCD-5, but that is just my opinion.

I've already heard the Abyss 1266 and I haven't asked for a loaner of any of their gear... Maybe when they design with humans in mind I might change my mind.

I don't find the 1266 uncomfortable, but it is not practical. The Diana just seems obtuse to fit their 'image', but I'm sure they have their reasons.

I owned the OG Abyss 1266. It was awesome in many ways and remains so. To date, still the most thunderous highest quality bass I've heard, although Audeze is getting awfully close with their XC. The OG 1266's weakness was its microdetail extraction which wasn't as good as HD800, LCD-4, or even LCD-X. It did some forms of detail very well. Loved how I could hear the drumheads vibrate so distinctly. Loved the staging and separation which other orthos could only imagine - maybe this is why Audeze went with these newer pads. I suspect the Phi and later TC perhaps improved upon the plankton aspect.

Comfort with their Cybermen suspension headband was actually better than most people thought. The Abyss got a bad rap because at shows, people did not know that they could swivel. I don't know if this was because attendees were being polite and didn't bitch or ask about it, or if the reps were being sub-par by not bothering to instruct attendees how to adjust them properly. I didn't feel the Abyss were any less comfortable than Audezes back then. Uglier for sure.

I eventually sold mine for one reason: the Cybermen apparatus kept hitting my headboard. So yes, there is a part of me that is interested in the Diana.

    ---

I generally wouldn't worry about those issues. Audeze headphones have traditionally been less sensitive to needing a good seal. The Abyss are like the STAX and Dan Clark Audio headphones: super sensitive to seal, hence the ASR hatchet job review of the Diana. Finally, planars tend not to be as sensitive to placement -or- get this: ear shape.

I like how serious the last option sounds like.

I dunno, given the latest iterations from the big boys in the playnar games, LCD-5 is a big yawn even if it sounds like a god-queef and even makes you toast and coffee in the morning. Seriously, we don't get all giddy when Magico comes out with a new $244,595 pair of speakers - why the silliness over a $4.5k pair of headphones that probably get more wrong than they get right compared to a boring-ass pair of HD600s? Sorry, I'm being grumpy, but this sort of TOTL stuff is incredibly boring to me.

Don't disagree. But I think it's good that we cover stuff from the Topping L30 to this. We cover a TOTL type HP once every two years. We pick it apart. Wow'd by their goodness but also honest about their shortcomings. I think our approach is fair. It's neither an ASR hatchet job nor a heroic-everything-is-great. We do help people decide if they want to plunk down the money. And even if not, at least provide an entertaining read. Heck, Car and Driver reviews supercars too.
