You misread my post. Math teacher should focus on teaching math, not even going off topic to talk anything political.

Here's some of my personal experiences when I was in High School in a very Red Exburb County in Florida over 10 years ago:
    • 9th grade English teacher was liberal.
      • Class had a project to talk about how bad war is, to convince the class that war is bad.
      • This was during the war of Iraq.
      • She made a point more than once that GOP Presidents were war loving folks.
      • Teacher was imposing her view on the class about this topic, implying the GOP loves war. This was crossing the line.
      • Fun fact: I'm still friends with her sons after all these years.
    • 11th grade Science teacher was conservative.
      • Also was the baseball coach who was the tough but firm teacher.
      • Teacher pointed out too many times class that why liberals (modern liberal) can't do sports or understand hard work.
      • Teacher also pointed out that conservatives don't cry but liberals do.
      • Teacher was imposing his view on the class about various topics that wasn't related to Science, implying that liberals are idiots. This was crossing the line.

Stuff like this above still happens in schools, and it is not only in High School. However, the point is that the teacher as much as possible should not impose any of their personal viewpoints in class. As much as my English teacher was sweet, she shouldn't be telling the class that GOP is bad since they love war. My Science teacher shouldn't be telling the class that liberals suck. That is stuff that should be kept to themselves. From my personal experiences I would prefer public school teachers only teach what they are hired to do with my tax payer money (unless it is private schools, then they can do what they want).

Here's one thing that happened in my Jacksonville backyard.

    Summary:

    • White teacher teaching in a majority black public high school had BLM flag hanging in her classroom doorway.
    • School Board told her to take it down, which she refused.
    • She was reassigned, and later sued the School Board via the help of the Souther Poverty Law Center.
    • She later got a $300k settlement to prevent any more litigation, she is also not allow to teach in Jacksonville Public School again (and most likely none of the other school districts in FL will want her due to her previous litigation).
    • Issue me and others have with the teacher was she was imposing her BLM viewpoint in her class, including her activism. Her job is to teach, not imposing her viewpoint even if the audience are for it. Teachers should be neutral.
      • This incident was referenced by the FL GOP when the State Board of Education banned CRT and other raced based teachings that make you "feel bad" last year.
      • This incident was referenced again with Gov DeSantis pushing the Stop "Woke" Act, which in law bans CRT from teaching in schools and if Private Businesses teach anything CRT to workers, then the worker have the right to sue the employer (which is too big government if you ask me, it's a f'ing Private Business).

Both of the teachers you encountered were out of line, no question.

The BLM school teacher, isn't that kind of a reversed perspective? It was likely there to support the existing viewpoints of her students and to make them feel emotionally comfortable, not to impose her viewpoint on them. A lot of these kids are understandably scared of authority figures like teachers and the sign probably helped lessen that kind of gap.

The issue here is teachers must be neutral on issues. A student can't figure out if she might be bias for or against BLM. Another issue here is as a teacher in the Duval County Public School system (which is Jacksonville) if a teacher was showing off a BLM flag then it could conclude that the Public School system and its School Board is Pro-BLM (which they are neutral on this issue).

A teacher can't be bias since that could mean that one side is right when they are teaching/discussing anything. I remember my old US Government Teacher, he was clear that we will never know about his beliefs and he loves when people guess what he believes in. He stated this was due to one legal issues and two it is our job as citizens who are about to hit the age of suffrage to learn what we believe in ourselves and how the City/State/Federal government works.

I guess I don't really read into BLM. it's just a statement that black lives matter and nothing else, and I don't see what people are talking about when they say it's anything more than that. It's no more of a political statement than "fish are wet" to me. it doesn't imply anything else. if it's politically anything, it's kind of a meaningless statement. I've met people who say BLM who are still hella racist, it's just buried in white liberal saviorism

It is the history of the BLM, including the group focusing on a left-wing ideology that a lot of people are having problems with it. A flag of BLM to me is just like a flag of the Democrats or the Republicans: Political statements. However, it is the Political statement that should if possible be avoided in the classroom since it isn't the place for it.

I guess it's kind of difficult to separate politics from life for me. There are lots of people who think I deserve to die, and say so openly. Is that a political opinion? Should a teacher remain "neutral" on whether or not I deserve to die? If I ask a teacher if I should die, should they not be allowed to say no?

Neutral on the issue of whether black lives matter as much as other lives?

For me I can separate politics from life. For starters I don't wanna think about politics at work when I have a lot of deliverables, when I'm trying to play a video game or watching my animu/anime shows.

As someone who is in the tradition of a Jewish Smuck, I get told almost daily that I need to die at work (angry customers), online forums, and sometimes in real life when someone looks at my ID and saying "I heard your people are in the same category as cookies, and I think you need to go in the oven with my coco chip cookies (that wasn't a joke)."

For me, you need to have thick skin and also just don't don't get shit like that bug you. Life will be moving on and you need to move on. Also, first amendment gives right to people to say horrible shit you don't like. Suck it up and move on.

The first question is why a teacher is even discussing politics? I was not pleased with my high school teachers with my previous posts, but that is more common than you think. If you tell a teacher you should die, most likely they will send you either to the guidance office or the Principal office (I seen this happen back in my high school days a few times). This is more to do to prevent legal issues. On the example with the teacher with the BLM flag, School Board paid out $300k. The Duval County School Board is in a big country with a lot of revenue. Smaller counties with much smaller school districts do consider $300k to be a major hit with their finances. That's why both School Boards demand their teachers to be neutral: To prevent parents irateness and lawsuits.

Neutral as BLM as a political moment, because it is a political moment like the Democrats and the Republicans.

Here's one comment that will piss off a lot of folks: I think just saying BLM is racist.

How about everyone matters? As a NY'er, there's more Anti-Asian violence than you might think, the usual attacks against my people that is sadly rising against on reporting, attacks against people who happen to be gay (there's tons of homophobes in my time in NYC), and tons and tons of black on black crime that no one gives a f**k about. But everyone goes bonkers when there's an accident between a cop and someone who happened to be black. Get rid of the term BLM and replace it with SBAA: "Stop Being An Asshole."

I think this is a bit of a fallacy. Saying one does not mean nobody else does. Saying I'm wearing a green pair of pants right now doesn't mean that all pairs of pants that aren't mine aren't green.

Don't disagree, these are serious problems and I don't think BLM does anything to invalidate them.

reducing the law-derived generational poverty that supports this cycle of violence is one of the biggest goals of genuine CRT

people will take you out of context here and misunderstand your argument, but I fully understand your frustration. Turning it into a media circus while doing nothing about the underlying enforcement issues of existing laws against these things (that also affect the Jewish community, the Asian community and the gay community) is extremely frustrating.

Saying black lives matter includes a tacit understanding that everyone matters. It is not a negation of anyone else mattering, a suggestion that crime in general doesn't matter, or a suggestion that black people matter more than anyone else, it was meant specifically to highlight one particular issue, that black people in America are killed by law enforcement at a disproportionate rate compared to population demographics

It does not mean no other issues matter, it's just speaking to a particular issue.

It's not about having or not having thin skin, it's about questioning whether a certain level of suffering is necessary or unavoidable. I take a lot of exception to "this is just the way it is." talk. For me, questioning these things is moving on. It's the only way I can move on.

I get it though, contention on opinion aside you're still the person with among the closest overall values to mine in this thread.

Ah the ol’ “saying Black Lives Matter is racist because it doesn’t mention my race” chestnut. Is it 2015 already?

My *black* friends seem to think BLM means "hey, as a black person I'm statistically more likely to be killed by a cop or in a "self defense" situation than anyone else. My life is worth as much as others'".

I'll let them all know that they're mistaken (even though any and all statistics you find support what they say). Either the stats have been doctored (probably by Bill Gates and Hillary) or their lives are indeed worth less.

Because somebody a couple of pages back had the poor taste to link to an Ezra Levant video - here's more Canadian politics:

I dunno. The teachers I remember in best regard from my school years shared their life and experiences with their students, even if, looking back now, I don't necessarily agree with all of their politics.

Robots could ostensibly teach math in a completely apolitical way. I'm unconvinced that would be better for developing independent thought in the long term.

My math teachers were my favourite in school. Then again, I'm also now a math teacher so maybe I'm biased...

My favourite quote from Mr. Ferguson in grade 9: "that's the best wrong answer I've heard today"

Yep. Education is supposed to be about life, not just information. And it should be about ideas, challenging ideas, challenging the parents' ideas.

    By the way
I forget who said that, or similar, many pages ago, but it stuck in my mind, and even now, I'm still thinking, "Is that such a bad thing? Maybe it's out turn!"

And no, I don't really believe in making people ashamed to be what they simply are. But it makes a point. The Great-British education I grew up could have been a little more balanced. No, wait: it could have been a lotmore balanced.

It should also be noted (with the caveat that I don't think "CRT" is actually being used to make white kids feel ashamed), that the US education system has been making non-white kids feel ashamed for...um...ever. Especially if you were a black kid raised in a state that is still salty about losing the Civil War, which I experienced first hand. But I'm sure they considered teaching that slavery wasn't so bad, the Civil War was caused by unjustified actions against the Confederacy, and skipping everything about Jim Crow and the Civil Rights movement except the "highlights" and some mild MLK material being "neutral" from their perspective
