If you want to lean more HD650 then absolutely Focal, but you may find them a little hot up high. Some open cell foam like what's in the Senn. covering the entire baffle or a disc just covering the diaphragm will get you where you'd want to be.

This last week I was deciding between the step up from the Ananda, the Arya V3, and a LCD-X 2021. From what others say the Arya doesn't sound like what you're after. I went with the LCD-X '21 and so far I am finding it is nicely straddling the divide between dynamics and planars and would recommend you try them.

I have a pair of new OG Clears coming in today. Does anyone have experience with break-in time on these? I'm usually a 100hr guy for everything, but I'm wondering if this is shorter or longer on these.

152h 43minutes and 26 seconds. Set a timer but don't mess it up, even if it's in the middle of the night or during an important meeting, in the cinema or in the sleep wagon. Else you're quickly in the overburn period and the headphone will instead get warm, slightley gooey and even mushy, simply overcooked.

just listen to them from the get go, don't overthink it. This is coming from someone who is OCD too about this stuff

My time with the Auteur was aborted, however IIRC things were pretty cludged together. I presume as a result of the semi open design and damping scheme. Though the image size and staging were fairly big it wasn't particularly open sounding either, but you're not likely to ever get sub-bass like that out of a dynamic that sounds open whilst maintaininga a large stage and image size.

When I first got them I thought they were faulty as they sounded super bright compared to what I remembered hearing out of @Mithrandir41's a mini-meet at Marv's. It was probably due to high level background noise there, and a combination of brain-burn and frontal foam sorted it out in the end. The bottom end loosened up very slightly over time, but not a huge difference.

    ^this

    Enjoy!

Basically 0 to 30 minutes (constant highish SPL listening) with the Focals. I think it's because how the driver is made with a diaphragm, surround, and VC like a high compliance speaker unit.

It's the gear. The EC stuff is warmer more laid-back relative to the SW51+ which can be on the more forward or bright side.

Right, I had no sense at the time of what I was listening to them through. Got it sorted out eventually though.

Edit: but I don't think I had SW51 at the time. Most likely was using MCTH or Magni when I first got Clear. Same difference though.

Thanks. Out of the box I found the bass loose with a lot of bleed into the lower midrange. After a few hours this cleared right up.

*EDIT* I ended up ordering a long AES/EBU cable. I had not realized that the Singxer SU-1 can do multiple outputs at once, so now that this is confirmed it is definitely the best option. I will look at something like the Pi2 Mercury Streamer in the future as well. I had looked at the IFI streamer, but I really want to use AES just because reasons.

In short, I am wondering if I should run a 25 ft. AES/EBU cable from my Singxer SU-1 KTE to a second DAC? Or would a Pi2AES be better? The SU-1 is already connected to a DAC with I2S. Is there another interesting way to distribute audio from Linux to AES receiver? I might also look into DANTE but I do not know anything about it.

I am having a hard time narrowing down how I want to resolve this temporary problem. I just got a smoking deal on some Kudos Cardea C30 speakers and I have placed them in my temporary multi-channel system that is now going to become 2-channel. It is a Monoprice HTP-1 and Parasound HCA-1205A. I may also swap the HTP-1 for my Audia Flight FLS-1 preamp with build in DAC board. Both the HTP-1 and FLS-1 have AES/EBU inputs. I've been wanting to mess around with AES/EBU for awhile so this seems to be an interesting chance to do so. So the question is, how should I deliver AES to my stereo? I use Qobuz, but I also have a Linux server running MPD with a really large library.

The Singxer SU-1 is connected to my server with a long USB cable. It works really well. It is sitting with my headphone setup a my work desk so it cannot move. It feeds I2S to my Holo Spring 3 KTE. Interestingly, I could reach my stereo with a 25 Ft. AES cable so I am tempted to try this. Can I run I2S and AES from the Singxer SU-1 at the same time? Do I need to connect only 1 output at a time?

Second option is a Pi2AES. These seem hard to get anymore. I would prefer to not have another MPD player, but I am not opposed to it. This should allow me to run Qobuz easily if I use a precanned RPI audio software so I am definitely tempted by this. Alternatively, if this could be a network extension of my existing MPD instance that would be great, but I do not think MPD works that way. I would like to find if it is possible to make something similar to the Roon Audio endpoint, but I am unsure if this exists in open source.

The Auteur was open enough for me, maybe not HD800 levels, but satisfying. The pads also make a difference. It's really a matter of tradeoffs, as he's likely not going to find anything 100% to his liking with all the things he's asking for.

This. Of course there’s no such thing as the 100% perfect headphone. I wouldn‘t have thought of the Auteur myself (not having heard much about ZMF yet). That’s exactly the kind of information I’m looking for. Additional headphones to obsess over.

Edit: Of course, I also want to hear everything that disqualifies the suggestions in the eyes of others.

I'm looking for guidance in stepping up my streaming experience. Sorry if this seems obvious or has been answered multiple times. I'm currently streaming Tidal (HiFi) through a Sonos ZonePlayer 80 (1st gen Sonos Connect?) using the internal DAC on the Sonos into my preamp.

I just don't have the patience/understanding for the various streaming specs/terms: lossless, MQA, 16 bit vs 24 bit, CD quality, etc.

Question: can I just insert a "quality" DAC (Bifrost or a Denafrips Ares) in between the Sonos and the preamp? Or would I need a better streamer to get the most out of the DAC? If I'm not streaming Tidal Master quality (24 bit?) will I hear a meaningful difference from a standalone DAC?

I use a Sonos Connect into a Bifrost 2. So, yes you can do that. The Bifrost is definitely a large step up from the Sonos DAC. Whether you would notice a difference adding a DAC would partly depend on the rest of your gear.

I don't think there's likely anything wrong with the digital output of the Sonos. A better DAC may or may not be beneficial.
