it's always a great day when one can try a NEW Trappist biere !
This Tynt Meadow is something I haven't heard of / seen before, nabbed one bottle to try and will find soon more.

Unlike the Amerikan Trappist from Spencer which were a complete lame disaster (glad they closed), this English version is actually borderline great!
similar in mouthfeel, color and taste to a Trappist Rochefort 8 IMO, had to bring the glass out into the sun to try and capture the caramel color. Very smooth, full not overly sweet and with a nice dry finish.
(I actually wrote the above before reading an overview description on Beer Advocate which matches! ha!)

Another for the IPA haters (sorry I can't resist):

Tasteful Nudity IPA, from Vancouver Island's Moon Underwater Brewing. The name comes from the hull-less, aka nude, barley provided for this variety by the local farm they source from. Yes that is a hairless pussycat in the photo.

Seems appropriate when listening to Wayne County.

Guys I am not a big fan of every Trappist beer, simply because I think that beer is something to quench your thirst, not something which constitutes a meal. I had a Orval as an apéritif and I loved it. Not too heavy, with 6.2 of alcohol not over the top. On the bottle it says they will send 2 glasses to you for 20 €. Might take them up on the deal, will try to find some in a supermarket tomorrow on my way back to drab Germany from la douce France.

I've been super stoked recently because the local shops have started carrying Tilquin and Drei Fonteinen. Holding out hope for some Cantillon to make its way into retail around here. And a couple weeks ago an honest to god blendery opened 10 minutes away https://www.miezabeer.com/ - just dropped in today for the first time and it's top flight.

The sun's over the yardarm here in England, enjoying a local brewery's hoppy but crisp, light ale (so local it used to be down the street):

In the meantime I have emptied some of those bottles.

    Trappistes Rochefort 6:

Tastes like beer when you drink it. nice dark colour. Has a very malty aftertaste with hints of what the Dutch call speculaas or a wee bit like the German Lebkuchen. Both reminds me of Yuketide. Nice

    Trappistes Rochefort 8:

More of the same, taste is very similar with more alcohol, personally I prefer the 6.

    La Trappe Isid'or:

Not as dark. Christmas time starts once the first drop hits yout tongue, more flavours than the Rochefort, sweeter, too. For my liking too much is going on at the same time. For me less of a refreshment more of a meal.

    Westmalle Tripel:

rather blonde, taste wise between Rochefort and La Tappe Isid'or meaning not as many different flavours once it hits your tongue and not as sweet as the La Trappe. Nice.

    Westmalle Dubbel:

dark, taste wise similar to the Tripel but sweeter maltier.Again leaning towards a meal. It also confirms that I prefer blonder beers to darker ones.

    Chimay green:

Holy Moly. 10 % alcohol, rather blonde. It has a lot of nice flavours. Not as many as the La Trappe, but they seem to be more in harmony. Of the more complex trappistes it is the one I like best (in spite of the high alcohol content)

    Orval:

Rathe untypical Trappist, very blonde only 6.2 % alcohol but again a nice buquet of flavours. As nice as the Chimay but slightly different. The Chimay ahows all those flavours at once, whereas the Orval does not exhibit all those flavours at once, it is rather a succession. My favourite Trappist of the ones I did taste. Probably not something the Trappist aficionado would expect.

    Delirium Tremens (not a Trappist):

Had it before the Chimay and I quite liked it blonde around 8 % alcohol very blonde, not that complex but nice. Nevertheless the Chimay is more and better of the same in every aspect.

De Ranke XX bitter (not a Trappist):

Not that bitter . It is very hoppy but I think it is still balanced and it hasf enough malty flavour, too, in order to not be a one trick pony. Probably the best thirst quencher of the lot. I like it.

Background: Grew up in a part of Germany where when you order a beer you will get a Pilsner. When being in Bavaria for the first time, I was surprised that I was asked Blonde or dark beer. Having spent some time in the UK came to appreciate good Ales to the point I found a lot of german beers to fizzy. Never took to Stouts, I do not like Guiness even draft. Once I returned to Germany found out that lots of beers in Germany are industrial. Nowadays I prefer a crafted Bavarian Helles to most industrial Pilseners.

As with audio gear you may like different flavours. Happy triangulation.

First of all sorry for all the typos in my last message.

    Afterthought:

Had the last of the la Trappe Isid‘or and I found out what spoils it for me it is tasting very yeasty. Of course you cannot escape that with in bottle fermentation but the La Trappe is the yeastiest of the bunch.
I was reminded that Chimay besides making beer also makes cheese. That gave me the idea that maybe you are supposed to have something to eat with these high alcohol content beers:

Maroilles one of my favourite washed rind cheeses. The smell is rather pungent but the taste is rather mild. Raw milk cheese of course. Raw milk cheese is to cheese made from pasteurised milk what a bull is to an ox. A match made in heaven.

Revving up to try some porters/stouts now that the weather is turning. Maybe I do a shootout once I acquire a few different bottles.

Hard to beat a fresh pour of Guinness after you've walked into an dim Irish pub on a crisp winter evening.

Since I lost so much weight I can have beer again only if burning 800-1000 calories. Krombacher beers are all solid but nothing special, and that’s sometimes a good thing.

Oh man, call me a snob, but beer and cheese go together like whisky and chocolate, or lamb and tuna fish;). Try grabbing some Beemster to pair with anything more hoppy, but not too fruity.
