I think its a wax guard of sorts...

@FlySweep I'd love to see a Massdrop RE262. One of those iems I've always regretted letting go of. The RE272 was awesome, too.

The 272 with some sub-bass would be great. Can someone please ask Fang for that?

272 w sub-bass would be amazing! I never had much isolation w/ the 262/272 but they just sound so good, and were so comfortable.

On that note, I heard some rumors of a Massdrop x HD6xx. Screw everything else! I'll be advocating my nuts off for that.

Seriously Massdrop make it happen!!! You will get so many people to throw their money at you for that. Either way, if any of the rumored collaborations come to fruition, then Massdrop has me by the balls to buy their stuff.

Seemed less rumour and more wishful thinking, just like this thread has devolved into. Not that there's anything wrong with daydreaming, Will's or Cee Tee's inbox might be a better outlet for that tho. :p

True... back to the topic at hand

I'll probably join the drop since I don't think I will have a better pair of beater IEMs for $35.

Edit: Just saw the shipping date was Aug. 5

    f**k that!

The RE-400/600 came with small tips like this too, it's basically an acoustic filter (as the nozzle has a fabric wax guard already) and I recall people saying the sounded and measured the best with these tips. Unfortunately they were too small for my ears to reasonably assess, so I'm hoping for larger tips with these rubber bars!

Interesting, so it's almost like a mini speaker grill (physically). I don't see it on the bi flanges but that could just be because it's deeper inside, dunno.

    @purrin
You use a different mic for the IEM measurements than the full size headphones, don't you? The distortion measurements on this rig consistently look much worse than the full size headphones and I don't think the IEMs are to blame. Look at the Rin-Choi RE-0 measurements.

I wonder how these will compare to the RE0 and RE ZERO. I owned both and personally thought the ZERO was better.

Mm... since I've got to hear this multiple times... (yesterday for pretty long period of time), plus got to directly compare it to my Senn HD580 (w/ HD600 grills, which make it a bit more relaxed), I'd say...

Tonally, it's basically like a clone of the HD580/600? Lower treble may be a bit smoother, or darker... more akin to HD650. Bass has very good extension, but doesn't really hit as hard as HD580 (bass bump?). Midrange is indeed a bit bloomy as Marv said. It kinda depends on fit, since I've noticed that mids get a bit thinner the deeper I insert the IEM. With my usual favorite way to fit, though, it is eerily similar to having a portable HD580/600... and also shares the same natural, smooth, no sibilance/peaky/shouty, etc... timbre (HD600 is a bit shoutier, even).

Basically, it's the perfect midrange-head IEM IMO. Bassheads won't love it. Treble-heads may find that it's a bit too smooth/dark. But for me, it's like the perfect sound signature. The 2-3KHz bump on Marv's graph doesn't sound as bad as it looks. I'm almost starting to think that for IEM measurements, a different compensation should be used. I hear more of the small peak at 5KHz (ever so slightly edgy/sharp sound) than that.

I refuse to give in to the hype!!!

...Mostly because the shipping date is not for another two months, and my short attention span will have probably purchased three other different IEMs to mess around with, and I'll have forgotten that I've even bought these (did that with the TH-X00, which showed up way long after I had forgotten about them).

Terrific impressions, Bill.. despite the smooth, slightly dark treble.. how do you find the extension there? HD6XX-esque timbre and flat freq sounds yummy.

Bloomy mids and smoothed out treble gives me the feeling these are closer to the RE-ZERO and RE-262 than they are the OG RE-0, too (which has dry-ish bass and mids.. and orgasmic dynamic driver treble).

    Hey @CEE TEE , I hope you've got a MD-ified RE-272 in the chute as a companion to the RE-00 :headbang:

OK, just joined. I really need decent inexpensive IEMs for my commute.

Mmm... I find treble extension to be decent. The lack of "air" due to isolation was pretty real, though, and it was obviously not as resolving as HD580 (small drivers probably account for this). Amazingly enough, instruments don't sound bunched up, or blended together. Just that fine micro details are somewhat lost or glossed over?

On that note, it did improve with amping. Leckerton UHA-6S Mk.II again came to the rescue. For some reason, it sounded like... 100x faster with Leck than without. There was a marked improvement in air and resolution when used with Leck (though it still didn't quite touch HD580 in resolution, but the air was plenty close). Thank God CT had everything ready! :D
