I wish I could cook worth a damn, I'd make myself a nice bowl of asopao right now to go with this raging cold I'm suffering thru... That would really hit the spot, haven't had it in so long (which is ridiculous given I live in PR). Chicken noodle soup or cheese broccoli will have to do... :(

I do most the real cooking at home. I've tried to teach my wife for 15 years and now she can make simple dishes. I don't blame her. She's American and most Americans, especially if they are from Michigan, don't know how to cook nor do they know what good food tastes like.

Mother-in-law drives me nuts. When she visits, my parents always take her out to quality authentic Chinese food establishments. She always orders orange chicken. This has been going on years now.

At least my wife now understands that simply adding mandarin oranges or ginger does not Chinese food make. Took her about 7 years.

being anglo but with varied ethnic preferences in food, am glad my Italian (2nd gen) wife prepares amazing meals based on recipes from previous generations.
and delivers tajine meals in spades as a bonus!

Stuff like this always reminds of the stereotype that white people never season their meat...

Sadly, I find many cases where that's true.

Edit: no offense to anybody of course.

Man I grew up with great Cantonese food in the Bay Area and I still love Orange Chicken at Panda Express. I don't think I've shared that with anyone before, it's like going to confession.

That's OK. Panda is a different style. Chi-Mex is what I believe it's called. Chi-Mex = deep fried lightly battered meat (usually chicken) covered with some kind of sugary goo sauce.

I bet she's old school in that no written recipes or precise instructions exist. This drives my wife nuts... Cooking dishes via the Force.

I'm also head chef in charge and do the vast majority of cooking at home. Most of it is just the daily (healthy) routine, but I love doing events and parties when I get the chance! Particularly BBQ, I shipped my CookShack to South Africa when I moved back here, so I have a genuine Ponca City OK smoker at my disposal. I am also into fermentation and make my own Sriracha, sauerkraut and other pickles.

My wife does the gardening - suits me fine! :)

That's pretty cool. I know a guy or two from Cape Town and a friend or two from Joburg. My current teammate is also from Joburg, so he tells me about South African food quite a little bit. He loves his braai, and he always tells me about biltong.

The more south I go the better the food gets, true.
I guess what we eat here won't be considered food in mediterranean places.

At least, we savages can make some fine wild pork on fire.

I used to make my own biltong when I lived in the U.S. ... I had a lot of stunned reactions when folks realized it's not cooked in any way :). There's really nothing more South African than Biltong and Braai. You should come visit, it will be worth it!

I already have a checklist of all the places I have to go where my different teammates live, and South Africa is definitely up there.
Definitely going to stick to where he recommends and the touristy places though. He has told me way too many sketchy stories for me to stray off in the middle of nowhere down there.

Good advice, we definitely run to all extremes here. Common sense and a local will go a long way to making it a safe trip!

I cook constantly. Before my audio obsession I had a gastronomy obsession. I consider both a curse. My mother is French and cooked really good food so I knew what good food is suppose to taste like. When I got out on my own I knew I wouldn't be able to get the food I wanted to eat at the price I wanted unless I did it myself. I have similar feelings with audio and I plan to DIY most of my high quality gear.

My favorite stuff to cook is gigantic meat. Just a couple weeks ago I made a texas style smoked brisket and pork ribs. One of my favorite meals was a beefsteak I made for a bunch of friends. I really like cajun food, French food and Vietnamese food. I never made my own Vietnamese food because I always found it in Texas or California. But now I live in France and I am forced to make my own since the Vietnamese food is quite inferior.

I have also hacked a crockpot to make it into a temperature controlled waterbath for cooking sous vide. Next I plan on integrating the system with a raspberry pi so I can SSH into it remotely to check the temperature of my meat. Also it allows me to use the processing power of Pi to implement some crazy stupid PID controlled system.

When I go out for Chinese food with my not-so-gastronomically-adventurous white friends, my strict rule is they can't order anything from the English menu that contains the word "balls". Actually, most of the time I don't even let them look at the menu and I just order for them.

    hello,

my household is two adults and two teenagers, we are evenly split into ovo-lacto vegetarians and omnivores.

i am the stay at home parent, i am ovo-lacto, and i do most of the cooking. MrsForBin bakes!!!

unless my daughter and i are out of the house, we eat ovo-lacto. (although on St Paddy's MrsForbin made real bangers and mash and i cooked up fake ones.)

really didn't cook very much at all before this household. my BFF is an INCREDIBLE cook and he has helped me immensely get better at it.

the household pretty much agrees that i can cook, but it is almost always a 75% winning margin. one kid is kinda picky, and the other would chose to live on meat lover's pizza, cow's milk and junk food.

the only unfortunate thing is that everybody but me is very hot spice adverse, makes it a challenge sometimes.

Love to cook…dishes are literally hit or miss. Little tip. If you are a man attempting to make spicy étouffée roux for the first time use no more than half a habanero. Don't use ten. Furthermore, don't finish cooking and then go take a piss without washing your hands. This is especially true if you are in your twenties and still in college. Spent half a week thinking I had caught something before I realized what happened. In retrospect it is probably fortunate that I didn't get lucky that night…for her anyway.
