I think we saw the 6k peak is a trait of the driver: http://www.changstar.com/index.php/topic,2208.msg61181.html#msg61181

In that case apply digital EQ seems to make the most sense, where if the peak was mostly resonance then damping via mods would make more sense. Either way I've been impressed with Sonarworks with stock headphone and I'd love to compare it with a heavily modded one.

According to my data, the 6k peak is not a driver trait.

I concur. I've actually measured my mod to be able to move the peak up to 6.5KHz from 6KHz. So the peak is most likely compounded from the driver's response and some other things (reflections?).

Yes, the peak can move based on location of mic with respect to enclosure and the material it's being coupled to. The HD800 is tough to measure because the enclosure is really shaping the response. Speakers are also tough to measure in room because the room shapes the response.

When I 1st began to use Sonarworks average compensation curve on my 800's I ran it between 50-70% wet/dry and then fussed with the bass boost and tilt controls to add more top and bottom end (+1-2dB max) and added some subsonic boost as well.

I did manage to wrangle a full spectrum average curve without the 35Hz cut off from them which I much prefer to the 'stock' curve.
Yes I do cut the output down 6dB just to make sure the plugin doesn't clip but I'm quite satisfied with the results.
This is the most satisfying EQ setup I've used, period.

And since my 800's are modded I look forward to hearing the differences between using the 'average' compensation and a custom curve based solely upon my 800's.

I (finally) have a HD800 en route via Australia. I blame all of you.

I too also have (yet another) HD800 en route via Australia. I also blame all of you, and myself.

So you're saying they cut 35hz and under in their curve? How do I convince them to get your modified curve?

Im currently using a MB Gungir + Val2 for my HD800s and loving it. Im now faced with big boy amp decisions. Air and clarity is what i crave but i don't think i can afford to get into the EC big leagues (unless someone down in AUS is selling a Balancing Act). Im currently waiting on the Black Widow to become available but wondering whether it will give me that spaciousness that Ive heard through some of the big tube amps. Id be happy to go second hand but living in Australia the market is limited.

What do we think everyone? I could possibly build a Bottlehead mainline but I'm open to suggestions.

What about the Bottlehead Crack? (unless that is what you meant by mainline)

Merv is getting a headache just by reading about people getting facetweeters.

Doesn't have the resolution id like and from my admittedly short listen had great tonality but i wouldn't call it especially spacious.

I almost felt bad for grabbing your HD800.

And then the bass I'm hearing totally makes that thought vanish. Bwahahahaha!

Okay, seriously, though. I think you could have kept it and EQ or something. This is truly end-game stuff.
