Love it. And yes, I also did my rec letters with it this year. I still have a lot to learn, but can typically get by with stealing and editing other people's templates.
I've never really done stuff completely from scratch. Taking a template and modifying is my preferred method. The recipes is an exception since math people aren't really cooks. Although Nathan Myhrvold might have something somewhere.
Sure. For me, it stemmed from the frustration of Word being a terrible platform for math. My tests are so much prettier now. They look like a textbook rather than an MS Word hack job.
Knowing LaTeX actually makes writing equations in MS Office easier too. In a Word equation box, instead of going "Insert symbol > Click alpha," you can just type \alpha and hit the space key. The right symbol is inserted just like in LaTeX. They call this the Math Autocorrect feature I think. Pretty neat!
One of my biggest frustrations with Word was having equations shrink when inline with other text. There were workarounds, but they were obnoxious. With LaTeX, for the most part, things look as they should without much fuss. When they don't, the fixes are less laborious.
Not a maths guy, so no need of formula. I was, however, fluent in the linotype phototypesetting language, and could achieve most stuff from complex form work to flowing text around images. ...
... later, I became fluent in vi (and modestly good at regular expressions). Then I worked in a support department where there were two of us that loved it. One of the products we supported was WordPerfect (The Unix version!) and we had to be formally cautioned to USE the damn thing, instead of vi, for our correspondence/etc!
