See, I tried one coconut with 1 yolk, and my wife got pissed at me because the whole kitchen smelled like eggs. Then I bought another set with nuts and no-yolk. And still no go. They are not cheap either. I give up. I tried the taro one before and I like it best.
It was just not meant to be. Mooncake is not bad, but I guess I'm an unrefined cheapskate that likes street donuts better. 4 mooncakes = 21 soft and puffy chocolate donuts that does a body good.
You should try the traditional ones which have lotus seed paste and salted duck yolks.
It is an acquired taste, but I love them especially the HK made ones. Not too big a fan of the ones with extra stuff either. The ice cream ones are great however.
That being said it's pretty pricey since it's a tradition thing, so beyond getting a few from my relatives, I generally don't buy them for myself.
4 moon cakes probably actually do = 21 chocolate donuts in calories. They have an enormous amount of calories. So much oil and sugar goes into making them.
Moon cakes are a guilty pleasure, but like @scapeinator1 I grew up eating the stuff, haha.
Ever try moon cakes filled with red or mongo bean? Those are a favourite of mine. I'm not overly fond of lotus seeds myself but they're alright I guess.
