I really like that he has transitioned to active bass units. As for the oval speakers from Scanny, the datasheets don't make me too hard. Maybe I'm not big enough of a fan of Sauron.

@Priidik Have you built any of his designs?

@Poleepkwa No. I started my own designs because back then he had no proper big speakers in his stable. I had to have at least 12'' bass. Family started to take way too much time, so I haven't even finished my first project. I will have something in the spring, I have promised to myself.

@Hrodulf I suppose there is not much to innovate. VC geometry is the last straw, before single sheet graphene becomes available, hahaha.Anyways, I have found that after the eff and dispersion I don't really care about the datasheets for mids and treble. It's more about the materials, motor tech and geometry.

Nice to see him make speakers with bigger woofers and simpler xovers. Those drivers are stupid expensive though.

I wonder how the Ellipticor-4 compares, or what each brings to the table. Both are quad-driver designs.

Yup. He does some good stuff, but with very expensive drivers. I may one day put together something with the cheaper reference Daytons. I consider the RS180-4 ohm a poormans ScanSpeak mid. Lots of choices for an integrated sub. I would have expected him to go full on active cross-overs for something like that though (using a miniDSP or so).

Holy crap! Not a single capacitor in the entire crossover!

There is a price to be paid if being a no-cap purist (as in not cheap drivers at least). It is an interesting crossover though. May model it to see what it does.

@ultrabike Any reason you like the 4-ohm RS180 over the 8-ohm version?

@philipmorgan, it seems it has better low end extension while retaining decent sensitivity (vented box). It also has decent high end and a smooth response. The BW and vented box requirements are almost the same as the ones for the 7" revelator. The trade off in price is perhaps a little more distortion and the cone break up that requires a notch filter. But IMO the break up is not hard to deal with.

That's cool. I've got my eye on the RS180 for a biamped MTM desk speaker project.

From specs, I definitively like the 4 ohm more than the 8 ohm.

No cap on the tweeter either. Is DC protection not an issue with an inductor in parallel?

Me thinks the inductor should short DC from the tweeter, so most of it will be burned in R1. I'm surprised too however. Those are very low order filters. The 18WE woofer seems to be running 2.5 way with the 21WE. Which in turn are running something like 2.5 with the 32WE? Maybe call that 2.75? Who knows. He seemed hell bend to avoid caps.

Ran some numbers. Inductor and tweeter are likely 0.2ohm and 3ohm at DC. Padded with an 8ohm resistor and a DC offset of 1V, it would give 24mV across the tweeter. Probably fine.

LOL! You have a good point. I expect about -28.7 dB DC drop across the tweeter relative to DC input power. A capacitor might help there indeed. It's not great, but perhaps not catastrophic. Ironic that many times folks avoid capacitors because of distortion.
